Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has received relief from the Supreme Court in a corruption case over 24 acres of government land. The Supreme Court on Monday has stayed the criminal trial against Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in the alleged corruption case related to withdrawal of notification to acquire land.
A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde issued the notice while hearing the Chief Minister's petition against the Supreme Court verdict and stayed the hearing against him. The Chief Minister had filed a petition against the High Court for dismissal of his petition seeking cancellation of the criminal case against him.
The High Court had directed the special trial court to take cognizance of the crimes against Yediyurappa and pursue the case based on the charge sheet filed by the Lokayukta police in 2012.
The personal complaint against Yediyurappa alleged that during his tenure as Chief Minister from 2008-12, he had illegally notified 24 acres of land through land acquisition so that private parties could get unfair benefits.
What is the matter?
The case relates to the alleged illegal possession of several 24 acres of land acquired for an IT project. The special court had refused to hear the 10-year-old illegal land scam against BS Yediyurappa. The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday reversed the decision, dismissing Yediyurappa's plea seeking an end to the criminal case. A case allegedly involving Yediyurappa mentions joining an SEZ area in the northern Bengaluru taluka. Now the Supreme Court has once again stayed the investigation of the case.
