Also Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the community on the occasion of Matua Maha Mela being organized to celebrate the occasion.

He said that today, on his birth anniversary, I pay tribute to the great Sri Sri Harichand Thakur. Dedicating his life to educating and uplifting the underprivileged, he set an example for all of us. Let us resolve to work towards an egalitarian society free from divisive thoughts.

Amit Shah tweeted that the Matua Maha Mela 2023 begins today with a live display of the heritage of the Matua community. My heartiest greetings to the pilgrims of the religious festival.

Around 45 lakh people are estimated to visit during the week to seek the blessings of the sect's founder at the fair organized by the All India Matua Federation. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal visited the fair at Thakurnagar in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Saturday.

An estimated 30 lakh people of Matua community live in Bengal. Also, the community has influence in at least five Lok Sabha seats and about 50 assembly seats in Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas districts.
