Manipur Violence: Situation returning to normal in Manipur, the blockade on NH-37 lifted; supply of essential commodities

Manipur Violence The situation in Manipur seems to be returning to normal. The blockade put up by a tribal group on National Highway-37 connecting the capital Imphal with Silchar in Assam has been removed. Police and security forces took this step to ensure the movement of 171 trucks with essential commodities.

Still blockade on NH-2

The police have cleared the NH-37, but the tribal organization continues to block the National Highway-2 connecting Imphal with Dimapur in Nagaland. The Tribal Integration Committee on Monday again blocked NH 2 in Kangpokpi and NH 37 in Tamenglong district at some places, demanding an adequate supply of essential commodities to the Kuki communities in the hilly areas of Manipur.

Six arrested in arson case

Six people have been arrested in connection with an incident of arson, police said. It is alleged that these people had burnt down four houses and a community hall in Imphal West a day earlier. Along with this, arms and ammunition were seized by the police during the search operation in several districts.

Search operations going on in many areas

The search operation was carried out by security forces in border and sensitive areas of Imphal West and East, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal Kangpokpi, and Bishnupur districts. "Seven arms and 81 rounds of ammunition were recovered from Imphal East, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts," police said.

This is the reason for violence in Manipur

The violence had erupted in the state in early May after a 'tribal solidarity march' was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitai community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Since then, more than 160 people have been killed and hundreds more injured in ethnic violence in Manipur.
