Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill attributed the defeat suffered at the hands of the Mumbai Indians to his team’s bowlers. He believes that a poor performance with the ball during the middle overs was witnessed—a lapse for which the team ultimately paid the price in the form of a loss.
In the match played on Monday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, despite Kagiso Rabada taking three wickets during the Powerplay, the MI team managed to post a total of 199 runs.
For the MI side, Tilak Varma played an unbeaten century knock, scoring 101 runs. Apart from him, Naman Dhir contributed 45 runs. In reply, the Gujarat team was bundled out for just 100 runs, allowing MI to secure a 99-run victory. Following the defeat, Gujarat captain Shubman Gill appeared visibly displeased.
Shubman Gill Holds Bowlers Responsible for the Defeat
During the post-match presentation, Captain Gill acknowledged that the Gujarat team failed to restrict Mumbai Indians (MI) to a manageable total, even while conceding that the nature of the pitch was somewhat slow and sluggish—a factor his team had identified right at the start of the match. Gill further stated:
“Honestly speaking, I feel we conceded far too many runs during the middle overs. On a wicket like this, I believe a score of 160-170 would have been a par score. However, I do believe there is a great deal for us to learn from this match.”
The GT captain remarked that this defeat serves as a learning opportunity for the team as they prepare for their upcoming away matches in the tournament.
According to CricViz statistics, this 99-run defeat marks the Gujarat Titans’ largest margin of defeat in the history of the IPL to date. Prior to this, their worst results included an 83-run loss against Chennai Super Kings in 2025, and a 63-run loss—also against CSK—in 2024. Gill further added, “I mean, this is a minor setback, but now we have to play a few matches away from home, so hopefully, we will get back on the winning track.”

Blaming the Bowlers for the Defeat
Following the loss, Gill spoke about the team’s poor bowling effort. He stated:
“I feel the wicket was a bit on the slower side. I don’t think we bowled in the right areas. The length balls weren’t coming onto the bat as well as expected; some were coming on, some weren’t, and some were keeping low. I believe we could have bowled with greater consistency on that specific length during the middle overs—something we failed to do.” — Gill
When asked if the conditions had changed during the second innings, Gill replied, “I think it (the pitch) remained pretty much the same. If there was any change at all, it might have actually improved slightly, as I feel the dew factor was a bit more prominent when we were batting.”
Speaking of the match itself, MI defeated the Gujarat Titans by 99 runs on the back of a magnificent all-round performance. Batting first, Tilak Varma played a blistering, unbeaten knock of 101 runs off just 45 balls. Despite losing early wickets, MI staged a powerful comeback during the death overs.
In reply, the Gujarat team’s top order completely crumbled. Ashwani Kumar (4/24), Mitchell Santner (2/16), and AM Ghazanfar (2/17) dismantled Gujarat’s batting unit, resulting in the entire team being bowled out for a mere 100 runs.
