Despite posting a massive total of 243 runs in the 41st match of IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians suffered yet another defeat. Sunrisers Hyderabad successfully chased down the target in 18.4 overs, winning the match by 6 wickets.
Following this defeat, MI captain Hardik Pandya admitted that his team is now running out of options this season. He stated that the five-time champions need to make changes in order to salvage their campaign.
What did Hardik say after the loss to Hyderabad?
In fact, this marked the Mumbai Indians' sixth defeat of the current season, a result that has pushed them down to 9th place on the points table with a mere four points.
Speaking about the team's struggles throughout the season, Pandya (Hardik Pandya after defeat vs SRH) also addressed the MI fans. He remarked that the team hasn't given the fans enough reasons to cheer for them. Acknowledging the fans' loyalty, Pandya noted that when fans chant for the opposition rather than their own team, "sometimes it hurts." However, he quickly added that it is the team's responsibility to give the fans something to celebrate.
Hardik Opens Up About His Pain
After failing to defend a score of 223 runs, when Pandya was asked how he intends to improve his bowling attack, he replied:
"I feel we don't have many options left this season; we really need to look at what changes we can make. I won't hold my bowlers solely responsible. I feel that, as a complete unit, we haven't been able to deliver the kind of performance that Mumbai Indians is known for. We really need to identify the specific areas we need to work on."
Hardik Pandya further added, "Sometimes it hurts when the opposition team comes in and people start chanting their names. But perhaps we need to give them more reasons to cheer for us." The Mumbai Indians captain stated that, with the unwavering support of the franchise owners and support staff, the team would find a way to navigate its way out of this situation.
He remarked, "We have dedicated owners and support staff; hopefully, we will come up with a solution."
Did MI Lose Due to a DRS?
Travis Head made Mumbai Indians pay the price for a major DRS. The left-handed opener appeared to be in scintillating form. He smashed 76 runs off just 30 balls, an innings that included 4 fours and 8 sixes. However, he could have been dismissed as early as the third over of SRH's innings had MI captain Hardik Pandya decided to opt for a DRS review.
Trent Boult delivered a ball outside off stump; Head attempted to play it but was beaten. Ryan Rickelton collected the ball, yet neither he nor anyone else showed any interest in appealing or calling for a review—despite the ball passing perilously close to the outside edge of the bat. However, replays clearly demonstrated that the ball had indeed grazed the outside edge of the bat. Had a review been taken, Head's wicket would have fallen at a stage when SRH had not even reached the 50-run mark on the scoreboard.
SRH Thrashes MI on Their Home Turf
The SRH batsmen subjected the Mumbai Indians bowlers to a severe thrashing, with not a single bowler conceding fewer than 10 runs per over. Notably, the ever-reliable Jasprit Bumrah leaked 54 runs across his four overs without managing to claim a single wicket.
After electing to bat first, Mumbai Indians had posted a mammoth total of 243/5 in 20 overs, powered by a blistering unbeaten knock of 123 runs off 55 balls by Ryan Rickelton. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down the target with 8 balls to spare, powered by innings from Travis Head (76 off 30 balls), Heinrich Klaasen (65* off 30 balls), Abhishek Sharma (45 off 24 balls), and Salil Arora (30* off 10 balls).
