AI-generated videos are rapidly flooding the internet, and YouTube is now taking a major step to tackle the growing problem of deepfakes and misleading synthetic content. The video-sharing giant has announced a new AI detection system that will automatically identify AI-generated videos and apply visible labels to them—even if creators fail to disclose the use of artificial intelligence.
The move comes amid a sharp rise in photorealistic AI videos that appear completely genuine to viewers. Many creators and AI-focused channels have already built massive audiences—and earned significant revenue—through content created entirely using generative AI tools.
YouTube Will Automatically Detect AI-Generated Videos
Until now, YouTube relied heavily on creators to voluntarily disclose whether AI had been used in their videos. Based on that disclosure, the platform would attach an “AI-generated” label to the content.
However, YouTube is now introducing an automated detection system powered by advanced internal AI signals and content analysis technologies. Under the new policy:
YouTube will independently identify AI-generated videos.
Videos containing realistic AI-generated visuals will automatically receive labels.
The system will act even if creators fail to disclose AI usage.
The company clarified that the feature will initially focus primarily on highly realistic or photorealistic AI content. Cartoon-style, animated, or stylized AI videos may not immediately fall under mandatory automatic labeling requirements.
AI Labels on Shorts and Videos Will Become More Visible
YouTube is also redesigning how AI labels appear across the platform to improve transparency for viewers.
On Long-Form Videos
The AI disclosure label will now appear:
Directly below the video player
Above the description section
On YouTube Shorts
For Shorts, the AI label will appear:
As an overlay directly on the video itself
According to YouTube, this updated placement ensures viewers can instantly recognize whether artificial intelligence has been used in the creation of a video.
What Happens If YouTube Incorrectly Flags a Video?
The platform acknowledged that mistakes can happen. If creators believe their content has been wrongly identified as AI-generated, they will be able to update or challenge the disclosure settings through YouTube Studio.
However, certain AI labels may remain permanent and non-removable in specific cases, including:
Videos created using YouTube’s own AI tools such as Veo and Dream Screen
Content containing C2PA metadata indicating AI-generated media
This means some videos will continue to carry AI disclosure tags regardless of manual creator changes.
YouTube Expands ‘Likeness Detection Program’
Alongside automatic AI labeling, YouTube is also strengthening creator protections against deepfake misuse.
The company has expanded its “Likeness Detection Program” to all creators aged 18 and above. Through this initiative:
YouTube can detect AI-manipulated videos using a creator’s face or likeness
Creators can request removal of unauthorized deepfake content
The platform will investigate videos involving copied or altered facial identities
The expansion is aimed at addressing growing concerns around AI-generated impersonation, misinformation, and unauthorized identity usage online.
Why YouTube Is Taking This Step
The rapid evolution of generative AI has dramatically increased the number of fake videos, manipulated clips, and deepfakes circulating across social media platforms.
Experts warn that realistic AI-generated videos can:
Spread misinformation
Manipulate public opinion
Damage reputations
Mislead viewers during major events
By introducing automatic AI detection and visible disclosure labels, YouTube aims to improve transparency and help users distinguish between authentic footage and AI-generated content.
AI Content Boom Forces Platforms to Act
The rise of advanced AI video tools has transformed online content creation. From AI-generated influencers to fake celebrity videos and realistic synthetic news clips, platforms are facing mounting pressure to regulate AI media responsibly.
With this latest update, YouTube is positioning itself at the forefront of AI transparency efforts as the battle against deepfakes and misleading synthetic content intensifies globally.
