Microsoft Offers Buyouts to 60,000 Employees, Including Indians, Amid AI Spending

Posted on 27th Oct 2026 02:05 pm by rohit kumar

Microsoft has introduced a voluntary exit offer for approximately 60,000 eligible employees worldwide, including workers in India, as the technology giant adjusts its workforce amid heavy investment in artificial intelligence (AI). The programme covers selected teams in India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. However, the company has not confirmed how many employees will accept the offer.

According to Microsoft’s official announcement, the Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) is a time-limited programme designed to give eligible employees financial support and career-planning resources if they select to leave the company. The initiative also allows participating business units to adapt their workforces to changing priorities.

Microsoft had approximately 223,000 full-time employees globally as of June 2026. India is among the four countries covered by the programme, although the exact number of Indian employees eligible for the offer has not been disclosed.

Who Is Eligible for Microsoft’s Voluntary Exit Offer?

The programme is available to eligible employees at internal job level 70 and below in participating teams across India, the US, the UK and Canada.

However, the offer does not cover every employee in these countries. Eligibility depends on the employee’s organisation and team, as well as business priorities, customer commitments and workforce requirements.

Microsoft has identified the programme as a voluntary option for employees considering a career move outside the company. Eligible employees are expected to receive individual offer details by email.

Employees should therefore check their official communication carefully to confirm whether they qualify and what terms apply to them.

Microsoft Buyout Package: How Much Compensation Will Employees Receive?

The financial package is an important consideration for employees deciding whether to accept the voluntary exit offer. However, Microsoft’s public announcement does not specify a universal payout equivalent to one year’s salary for every eligible employee.

Reports indicate that compensation can depend on factors such as job level, location and length of service. Business Standard has reported that the expected package for eligible employees in India may include one month of base salary for each completed year of service, along with health insurance and career-transition support.

The exact terms of the new programme should be confirmed through each employee’s individual offer. Employees should not assume that every participant will receive the same amount or that a one-year salary payment is guaranteed.

What Is the Deadline to Accept the Microsoft Exit Offer?

Reports indicate that eligible employees have until December 1, 2026, to decide whether to accept the offer. Employees should verify the deadline and departure date in the official communication they receive from Microsoft.

The programme is voluntary, meaning eligible employees can review the terms before deciding whether to participate. The company has not announced how many employees it expects to leave under the scheme.

Will Microsoft Employees Who Reject the Offer Lose Their Jobs?

Rejecting a voluntary exit offer does not automatically mean an employee will be laid off. Microsoft has described the programme as a time-limited option for eligible employees, while stating that workforce decisions depend on the needs and priorities of individual business units.

Employees who do not accept the offer may continue in their existing roles, subject to normal business and organisational decisions. Any future involuntary layoffs would be a separate development and should not be presented as confirmed without an official announcement.

The company has also said it will continue helping employees build new skills and explore internal opportunities where appropriate.

Why Is Microsoft Offering Voluntary Buyouts?

Microsoft’s workforce initiative comes as the company invests heavily in AI infrastructure, including data centres and computing capacity. The company has forecast substantial capital expenditure for 2026, adding pressure to balance long-term technology investments with operating costs.

The voluntary exit programme provides another way for participating business units to adjust staffing levels without immediately relying on compulsory job cuts. However, Microsoft has not stated that AI is directly replacing every role covered by the offer.

The programme also reflects a broader challenge facing technology companies: aligning employee skills and workforce structures with rapidly changing business priorities while continuing to fund AI development.

What Did Microsoft’s Chief People Officer Say?

Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief people officer, announced the Voluntary Exit Offer in a message to employees on October 26, 2026.

Coleman described the initiative as a new approach for the company and said Microsoft would learn from the experience. She also emphasised helping employees focus on important work, develop new skills and explore opportunities within Microsoft where appropriate.

Her message highlighted that a uniform approach would not suit every team or employee, as business needs and workforce priorities differ across the organisation.

Microsoft Job Cuts in July 2026

The latest voluntary exit programme follows workforce reductions announced earlier in the year. On July 6, 2026, Microsoft said it was eliminating approximately 4,800 roles, representing around 2.1% of its global workforce.

In its official communication, the company said it had redeployed more than 4,000 employees to other roles over the preceding year and had also offered a voluntary retirement programme. Microsoft said these measures were part of its effort to align staffing and investment with changing business priorities.

The July job cuts were a separate action from the new voluntary exit offer. The two developments should not be combined into a single confirmed layoff figure.

What Should Indian Microsoft Employees Know?

For employees in India, the key points are:

Eligibility: The programme covers eligible employees at level 70 and below in participating teams.

Participation: Not every team or employee is included.

Compensation: Individual terms must be checked in the official offer; a one-year salary payout is not confirmed for everyone.

Decision deadline: Reports cite December 1, 2026, but employees should verify the date in their offer email.

Job security: Declining the offer does not automatically mean termination.

Internal opportunities: Microsoft says employees may continue to explore training and other roles within the company.

The number of Indian employees eligible for the programme remains unclear. Employees should rely on Microsoft’s official communication for their personal eligibility, compensation and exit arrangements.
