There may be a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden. Both the leaders are likely to attend the Quad Summit to be held in Japan. The meeting will discuss stopping China's expansion in the Indian Ocean. Earlier, during the 2+2 meeting, there was a virtual meeting of both the leaders.

The White House said that US President Joe Biden will visit South Korea and Japan next month. During this, he will attend the Quad Summit in Tokyo and will also meet the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. Biden's visit to South Korea and Japan has been scheduled for May 20 to 24.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Wednesday that the visit would advance the Biden-Harris administration's solid commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region. During this, Biden will also hold bilateral meetings with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.

Virtual meeting of both the leaders during 2+2 meeting

Earlier, during the 2+2 meeting, there was a virtual meeting of both the leaders. Biden had reiterated to PM Narendra Modi not to buy oil and gas from Russia amid economic sanctions imposed on Russia due to the attack on Ukraine.

Virtual meeting of quad leaders held two months ago

Two months ago there was a virtual meeting of the Quad leaders. US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were also present. The meeting also discussed issues including Ukraine and Russia, developments in the Indian Ocean region, and the Pacific Islands.

A personal meeting of both the leaders was held in 2021

The last personal meeting between Modi and Joe Biden took place at the White House in September 2021, when PM Modi visited Washington. The two leaders discussed a range of matters including economic cooperation, defense ties, the Quad as well as climate change.

What is QUAD?

QUAD means Quadrilateral Security Dialogue is a group of four countries. This includes the US, Australia, India, and Japan. Maritime cooperation between these four countries started after the 2004 tsunami. The idea of QUAD was given in 2007 by the then Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe. However, Australia remained out of the first group under pressure from China.

In December 2012, Shinzo Abe again put forward the concept of the Democratic Security Diamond of Asia, which included the four countries to promote free trade in the seas adjacent to the countries of the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific Ocean. Finally, in November 2017, the QUAD group of four countries was formed.

Purpose of QUAD

It aims to end the domination of any country, especially China, on the sea routes of the Indo-Pacific. Today all these democratic countries work on a broad agenda of issues of security, economy, and health.

Do QUAD countries have a problem with China?

China's growing military and economic power is a strategic challenge for India. China has occupied islands in the South China Sea and developed military assets there. China is also trying to increase its influence on trade routes in the Indian Ocean, which is raising concerns for India.

America's policy is to control China in East Asia. For this reason, it sees QUAD as an opportunity to regain dominance in the Indo-Pacific region. America has called Russia as well as China a strategic rival in its national security strategy.

Australia is concerned about China's growing interest in its land, infrastructure, politics, and its growing influence on universities. The dependence on China is so high that it has continued a comprehensive strategic partnership with China.

Japan has been the most troubled by China over the past decade, which has not hesitated to use the military to expand its jurisdiction. Importantly, Japan's economy is largely dependent on trade volume with China. Because of this, Japan is balancing its economic needs and regional concerns with China.
