Gold and silver prices have declined ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali 2026, offering some relief to customers planning festive purchases. The correction has also raised expectations among jewellers and bullion traders, who are anticipating stronger demand during the festive season.
According to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), around 46–52 tonnes of gold could be sold on Dhanteras this year, compared with approximately 36 tonnes during the corresponding occasion last year. Silver sales on Dhanteras alone are estimated at around 250 tonnes.
The association also expects combined sales across Dhanteras and Diwali to reach approximately 65 tonnes of gold and 300 tonnes of silver.
Gold and Silver Demand Expected to Rise During Dhanteras 2026
Surendra Mehta, National Secretary of IBJA, said the recent decline in precious-metal prices is encouraging for both customers and bullion traders.
According to Mehta, gold demand during Dhanteras and Diwali could increase by around 7–10% compared with last year. Silver demand is also expected to grow by approximately 7%.
The gold sales projection of 46–52 tonnes on Dhanteras represents an increase over last year's estimated 36 tonnes. Silver sales on the day could reach around 250 tonnes.
Including Diwali, total gold sales are projected at approximately 65 tonnes, while silver sales could reach around 300 tonnes.
These figures are industry estimates and should not be treated as confirmed sales data.
How Much Further Could Gold and Silver Prices Fall?
Mehta indicated that there could still be room for further price corrections before the festivals.
According to his assessment, gold prices could decline by another 3%, while silver prices could fall by approximately 7–8% before Dhanteras and Diwali.
However, these are projections rather than guaranteed price movements. International bullion prices, currency movements, US interest-rate expectations, and investor sentiment can all influence domestic gold and silver rates.
Jewellers are already reporting interest from customers making purchases for weddings and other celebrations. Some buyers are using the recent price correction to plan their festive and wedding-season purchases.
Why Are Jewellers Expecting a 20–25% Rise in Sales?
Rakesh Belvekar of Mumbai-based Belvekar Jewellers believes the decline in gold and silver prices could encourage more customers to visit jewellery stores.
He expects sales to increase by around 20–25% this festive season, although the outcome will depend on price stability and consumer spending.
Belvekar said prices stabilising around ₹1,25,000 per 10 grams for gold and ₹1,50,000 per kilogram for silver could support stronger buying interest.
However, consumers may remain cautious because of inflation, interest rates, and household budget pressures. Buyers with available funds may take advantage of lower prices, while others could prefer smaller purchases.
Gold Coins or Jewellery: What Are Customers Likely to Buy?
Jewellers are also observing changing preferences among customers. According to Belvekar, gold coins could attract a larger share of demand this Dhanteras as buyers look for relatively straightforward purchases.
He expects around 60% of demand at his business to come from gold coins and 40% from gold jewellery.
Kumar Jain of Umedmal Tilokchand Jewellery also reported stronger bookings for gold coins. He expects demand for silver coins to face pressure because of the metal's recent price volatility.
These are individual jewellers' expectations and should not be interpreted as an industry-wide sales breakdown.
Will Customers Prefer Smaller Gold Purchases?
Darshan Desai, CEO of Aspekt Bullion & Refinery, said gold prices have declined in recent trading sessions, but the market remains sensitive to global economic developments.
Investors are monitoring US interest-rate expectations, movements in the dollar and inflation data. The US Federal Reserve's monetary-policy decisions could also influence the direction of international bullion prices.
For Indian consumers, lower prices may encourage festive buying. However, gold remains expensive compared with historical levels, which could lead some households to Select smaller and more carefully planned purchases.
Lightweight jewellery, coins and lower-value purchases may appeal to customers who want to participate in the festive tradition while managing their budgets.
Gold and Silver Prices on MCX: What Happened on Tuesday?
On Tuesday, November 3, gold and silver futures witnessed selling pressure on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).
According to the figures cited in the market report, around 10 am, gold futures for December delivery were trading at approximately ₹1,38,875 per 10 grams, down ₹1,386.
Silver futures also declined during Tuesday's session. Market prices continued to fluctuate in the run-up to Dhanteras.
On Wednesday, November 4, MCX gold and silver futures were again trading lower in early trade. At around 9:28 am, gold futures were down 0.09% to approximately ₹1,39,333 per 10 grams, while silver futures fell 0.95% to around ₹1,77,985 per kilogram.
Prices can change throughout the trading session, so buyers should check the latest rates before making a purchase.
How Much Have Gold and Silver Prices Changed Since Last Diwali?
Anindya Banerjee, Head of Currency and Commodity Research at Kotak Neo, noted that gold and silver prices have remained higher than their levels during last year's Diwali.
The figures cited in the report put gold at approximately ₹1.27–1.28 lakh per 10 grams during last year's Diwali, compared with around ₹1.37–1.38 lakh per 10 grams in the current period.
Silver was quoted at approximately ₹1.58 lakh per kilogram last Diwali, compared with around ₹1.80 lakh per kilogram in the current period.
Although prices have corrected from recent highs, both metals remain above the quoted levels from last year's festive season.
What Should Dhanteras Buyers Watch?
The recent decline in gold and silver prices has improved buying sentiment ahead of Dhanteras, but further movements remain uncertain.
The IBJA's forecast points to higher festive demand, while jewellers expect customers to consider coins, lightweight jewellery and smaller purchases. At the same time, global interest-rate expectations, currency movements and inflation will remain important factors for bullion prices.
Dhanteras falls on November 6, 2026, followed by Diwali on November 8. The coming trading sessions will be important in determining whether the recent price correction translates into stronger festive purchases.
