
Mumbai Weather: Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in Mumbai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow' alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy rain at isolated places on Friday. In Maharashtra's Palghar and Thane, a holiday has been declared for all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools on Friday given the warning of heavy rain.
'Red' alert issued for Mumbai
IMD has issued a 'red' alert for Mumbai till 8:30 am on Friday. According to IMD, there is a possibility of very heavy rain in Mumbai City and adjoining areas. Modak Sagar Lake, one of the seven lakes in Mumbai, started overflowing at 10:52 pm on Thursday.
It is the fourth freshwater supply lake for Mumbaikars after Tulsi Lake, Wehar Lake, and Tansa Lake. Due to incessant rains in the catchment area, the Tansa dam started overflowing and its 15 gates were opened, releasing 1,65,000 cusecs of water, officials said. In the neighboring Palghar district, 8,400 cusecs of water are being released from the Dhamani dam and 21,100 cusecs from the Kavadas dam.

Thane and Palghar administration has declared a holiday for schools, junior colleges on Friday amid heavy rain forecast in the region. Heavy rains lashed parts of Thane district in Maharashtra on Thursday, causing waterlogging in the area.
A water-logging-like situation has developed.
Many families were shifted from residential areas to safer places. Meanwhile, a 32-year-old man was washed away in a swollen nullah near a creek while fishing amid heavy rains in Kalwa town of Thane district. Several low-lying areas of Bhiwandi and Mira Bhayandar in Thane district, while Vasai and Virar in Palghar district were inundated due to incessant rains, officials told news agency PTI.
Railway affected
In Mumbai, too, heavy rains on Thursday led to water-logging in many areas. The traffic jam was seen on the main roads. Meanwhile, suburban train services of both Western and Central Railways were delayed.
Water-logging was observed in Matunga, DN Nagar, Byculla, Trombay, Azad Maidan, Kandivali, Kalbadevi, Oshiwara, Dahisar, Magathane, with most of these areas covered with about half a foot of water. Western Railway's suburban train services were delayed by 10-15 minutes throughout the day due to rain.
