Violence continues against the Waqf Amendment Act in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The scene of destruction was seen in the form of burnt vehicles on the streets, looted shopping malls, and pharmacies vandalized. The streets in Murshidabad remained deserted on Sunday. Shops remained closed and people remained inside their homes.
Now the administration has decided to extend the suspension of internet services to the adjoining districts of Malda and Birbhum. At the same time, some additional areas of Murshidabad district have also been brought under the purview of suspension of internet services. According to the information received, this step has been taken to prevent the spread of rumors.
Suspension of the internet in these places
Earlier, the suspension of internet services was implemented mainly in disturbed areas like Suti, Jangipur, Dhuliyan and Samserganj, other areas were most affected by violence and riot-like situations. A state police insider has given this information.
However, the situation in Murshidabad has come under control to some extent after the state police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel started joint patrolling on Saturday night following the order of a special bench of the Calcutta High Court. The main tension among law enforcement officials is the continuation and sharing of fake information about the tension through various social media platforms.
The ban will be imposed till 10 pm.
The suspension of internet service in the extended areas will remain in force till 10 pm on April 15. Whether the suspension will be lifted after that or not will be decided depending on the situation at that time. Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF), whose personnel are mainly deployed in the disturbed areas, will send a report on the developments after the visit of BSF Additional Director General (Eastern Command) Ravi Gandhi to the disturbed areas.
During the visit, Gandhi will review the deployment of BSF personnel in the area and will also discuss with senior state police officials on how better coordination can be achieved in the matter.
BSF alerted
The BSF has also been alerted to ensure full security of villages along the international borders with Bangladesh in Murshidabad and Malda districts to ensure that members of underground extremist groups there do not enter Indian territory and escalate the existing tension.
