Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa is retiring on 29 November. Earlier on Wednesday, he gave a Farewell speech. In this speech, General Bajwa accepted that the army has been interfering in the country's politics for 70 years, but will not do so now.
61-year-old Bajwa advised politicians and especially Imran Khan without naming them. Said- It is very important that while speaking about the army, words should be chosen properly. According to Bajwa- The kind of language that has been used by the army in recent months is very wrong and painful.
Imran is on target
Imran and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who lost power in April, abused the army and its chief General Bajwa from every public platform. Khan came to power only with the support of the army and when he failed on every front, the army stopped supporting him. Khan's government fell. Since then, Imran has been using objectionable words against General Bajwa.
Khan called Bajwa a neutral, a traitor, a traitor, and even an animal. However, never directly named. Bajwa mentioned this. Said- The new government is being called imported and selected. We were not told what. This should be closed.
Bajwa said- As Army Chief, I am talking to the country for the last time today. The army interfered in politics for 70 years. In February last year, we decided that now we will stay away from political matters. This process will continue even after I am gone.
the army is being made the villain
Bajwa further said – wrong things are being spread about the army. People are being instigated. Not only this but when criticism is given, the tone and words are very bad. This should be taken care of. I am not saying that the army did not commit mistakes. And why the army? Any institution can make mistakes. It also includes leaders and civil society.
He said- Now the time has come that we should keep our selfishness and ego in the corner and think only about the country. Pakistan is going through a very difficult phase at the moment. Our economy is in the worst phase. What is needed is that all the political parties leave their arrogance and sit together, learn from past mistakes and get the country out of this situation. We have to follow the path of democracy only. In politics, victory and defeat have continued and will continue.
1971 defeat also mentioned
General Bajwa also referred to India's defeat in the 1971 war and the birth of Bangladesh. Said- I do not believe that the army had failed in 1971. If anyone had failed, it was our politician. At that time, not 92 thousand, but only 34 thousand soldiers were on the battlefield. Along with 2 lakh 50 thousand soldiers of India, there were also 2 lakh soldiers of Mukti Vahini. Despite this, we fought bravely. It was even mentioned by the then-Indian Army Chief Field Marshal Manekshaw.
Bajwa became emotional and said – We made sacrifices for the protection of the country and what is happening with us today is injustice. I salute those who have been martyred.
Bajwa remained Army Chief for 6 years. In 2016, he took command of the army. He got an extension of 3 years after a constitutional amendment. Now another extension was offered to him, but he thought it best to retire.
