Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said that the members of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the attack on him in Wazirabad were being pressurized to distance themselves from the findings of the case. He claimed that the powerful quarters were responsible for the attack. Imran Khan tweeted, "According to media reports, JIT members are being pressurized to recuse themselves from the findings of the JIT probing the assassination plot against me." This confirms my firm belief that powerful quarters were behind the assassination attempt on me.
14 others including Imran Khan were injured in the attack
A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist was killed and 14 others, including Imran Khan, were injured in an attack in Wazirabad on November 3, Dawn reported. The PTI's "Hakiki Azaadi" march against Islamabad was halted on its way to Islamabad. The Punjab government set up a joint inquiry to investigate the attack.
An official told Dawn that apart from the gun attack by suspect Naveed Mehar, three unidentified shooters fired from a great height with unknown weapons. Meher was arrested at the scene of the attack. Imran Khan has repeatedly said that three shooters were involved in the attack against him in Wazirabad, reports Dawn. In an address on 5 January, Imran Khan said that two to three people were behind the plot to assassinate him. He called for a powerful body backed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan to investigate.
Dawn quoted Imran Khan as saying, "I know the country's armed forces are making sacrifices for the country but there are black sheep in every institution." "But the person who planned this, I want them to cooperate with the JIT. Action should be taken against those who willfully obstructed justice," he added. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said that according to news reports, an organization working under the Government of Pakistan was not ready to conduct a forensic analysis of mobile phones sent by the Joint Investigation Team. However, the Government of Pakistan has rejected the claims made by Imran Khan.
Last week, Pakistan's Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that apart from the arrested suspect, there was no second or third suspect involved in the incident, Dawn reported. Speaking at a press conference, Rana Sanaullah said that PTI can investigate as much as it wants, however, it will not be able to bring in a second or third suspect.
