Panic again in Kerala: Explosion-like sound, people in fear due to earthquake tremor, more than 280 evacuated to a safe place

People had not yet recovered from the incident in Kerala's Kasargod and another new trouble came to the fore. Suddenly sounds like explosions were heard in Anakkallu area here on Tuesday night. Also, mild tremors of earthquake were felt. This incident spread panic in the surrounding area. After hearing the sounds, more than 280 people have been taken to a safe place.

 

287 people evacuated safely

 

A police officer said that 287 people from 85 families were taken to a school late on Tuesday night. The first sound was heard at 9:15 pm. After this, mild tremors were felt at 10:15 pm and then at 10:45 pm. These sounds were heard in a radius of one to two kilometers, which spread fear among the villagers.

 

Officers reached the spot.

 

Upon getting information about the incident, police, revenue officials and local representatives immediately reached the spot and took stock of the situation. They took these families to a nearby school at night for safety. A police officer said that the villagers slowly started returning to their homes on Wednesday morning.

 

So far the reason for these explosion-like sounds and earthquake tremors has not been clear. Administrative officials have ordered an inquiry into this and have asked people to be cautious.

 

The accident took place during the festival in the temple in Neeleshwaram

 

Earlier, at least 154 people were injured, eight of them seriously, when fireworks exploded during the festival at 'Anjuthambalam Veerakavu Temple' near Neeleshwaram in Kasaragod district on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. According to the police, the accident took place during the annual ritual event 'Kaliyattam', also known as 'Theyyam'. Thousands of people participated in this ritual event. The explosion occurred when a spark fell inside the shed storing firecrackers, which set the entire storage of firecrackers on fire and a loud explosion occurred. The firecracker storage place was 100 meters away from the fireworks place. Police had said that while fireworks were being burst, a spark fell on the firecracker storage area and caused an explosion. Many people were burnt in this accident.
