The death toll from a tragic train accident on the outskirts of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, has risen to 14. Officials confirmed this on Tuesday morning. Relief and rescue operations have been ongoing continuously since the accident occurred.
Bobby Rasyidin, CEO of the state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia, stated that the deaths of 14 people have been confirmed so far. All bodies have been sent to a hospital for identification and other formalities.
How Did the Accident Occur?
The accident took place on Monday at Bekasi Timur Station, a busy railway hub located just outside Jakarta. A long-distance train slammed violently into the rear carriage of a commuter train that was stationary at the station. The collision was so severe that the carriages sustained heavy damage, and many passengers became trapped inside.
Chaos erupted at the scene immediately following the accident. Relief workers and emergency teams worked to extract the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals. There are also reports of numerous injuries, although the exact number of injured passengers has not yet been released.
How Was the Rescue Operation Conducted?
Mohammad Syaugi, head of Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency, described the extraction of trapped individuals as an extremely delicate and arduous task. Rescue teams are attempting to reach the passengers by cutting through the train carriages using specialized equipment and trained personnel. He noted that some individuals remain trapped inside and are still alive.
According to eyewitnesses, relief workers are utilizing angle grinders to cut through the metal carriages. The scene remains chaotic, with many people arriving at the station in search of their relatives. One individual was seen weeping while clutching his brother’s blood-stained bag.
Railway officials explained that the commuter train initially collided with a taxi that was stalled on the tracks; immediately thereafter, the long-distance train approaching from behind crashed into it. The impact of the accident was most severe on the carriage reserved for women, which sustained extensive damage. Green SM Indonesia stated that the taxi involved in the accident was part of its fleet and that the necessary information has been provided to the investigative agencies.
President Visits Hospital to Inquire About the Injured
Following the accident, President Prabowo Subianto visited the hospital to inquire about the condition of the injured. He announced that, in light of the severe traffic congestion near the railway tracks, a flyover would be constructed at the location. Additionally, orders have been issued for a thorough investigation into the accident. He also acknowledged that the maintenance of several railway networks across the country is currently inadequate.
The National Transportation Safety Committee has initiated an investigation into the accident. Road and rail accidents occur frequently in Indonesia. Earlier in 2024, a train accident in the West Java province claimed the lives of four people and left several others injured.
