Vaibhav Suryavanshi Test Debut: Ajinkya Rahane Warns Against Pressure, Says IPL and International Cricket Are Worlds Apart

Posted on 6th Aug 2026 10:23 am by rohit kumar

Former India cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has urged caution over discussions surrounding 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi's prospects in Test cricket. Rahane believes it is too early to talk about the youngster's Test career and stressed that there is a major difference between performing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international cricket.

Rahane made the remarks while speaking with David Lloyd, Phil Tufnell, Alastair Cook and Michael Vaughan on the Stick to Cricket podcast. He said Suryavanshi should be given enough opportunities to play his natural game without being burdened by expectations.

Ajinkya Rahane Says Vaibhav Suryavanshi Should Not Be Put Under Pressure

Rahane pointed out that there is already considerable attention surrounding Suryavanshi because of his performances at a young age. The former India batter believes adding pressure by prematurely discussing a Test career could affect the teenager's development.

According to Rahane, scoring heavily in a short period during an IPL match is very different from doing the same against international bowlers in Test cricket. He emphasized that the youngster needs time and experience before conclusions are drawn about his prospects in the longest format.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi's International Comeback in Zimbabwe

Suryavanshi's first international series did not produce the expected results. The teenager made his T20I debut against England in Manchester but managed only 42 runs across three matches.

He responded strongly during India's subsequent tour of Zimbabwe. Suryavanshi scored a half-century in the opening T20I, followed it with 20 runs in the second match and then produced an impressive 81-run innings in the third game.

His performances earned him the Player of the Series award and helped reinforce his reputation as one of India's most exciting young batting prospects.

Suryavanshi Enters ICC T20I Top 50

Suryavanshi's impressive performances against Zimbabwe also resulted in a major rise in the ICC T20I batting rankings.

The youngster climbed 230 places in the latest rankings to reach 48th position with 536 rating points. It was the first time he had entered the top 50 of the rankings.

Rahane Retires From International Cricket

Rahane's comments came shortly after he announced his retirement from international cricket on July 30. The former India captain shared the decision through a video posted on Instagram.

During his international career, Rahane represented India in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is. He was particularly known for his performances in Test cricket and played a significant role in India's overseas campaigns.

For now, Rahane's message is clear: Vaibhav Suryavanshi's talent should be nurtured without rushing him into discussions about Test cricket. The teenager has plenty of time to develop his game, gain experience and eventually prove whether he is ready for the demands of the longest format.
