Chandigarh, Feb 17 (IANS) Having been at the forefront of the 'Green Revolution' in the agriculture sector in the 1960s, Punjab has now got a Bureau of Agriculture Promotion.
The agrarian state has set up the bureau to provide a single window system to farmers for the development of agriculture.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has given his approval to constitute the Bureau of Agriculture Promotion (BAP).
Badal approved the setting up of the bureau on the lines of the Bureau of Investment Promotion to give a push to the farming sector in the state.
This bureau would provide all the facilities to farmers under a single roof for developing agriculture as a more remunerative profession. It would also act as a catalyst for research and development activities in agriculture, besides promoting new farm practices on scientific lines, a state government spokesman said.
Punjab alone contributes over 50 percent of the foodgrains to the national kitty despite having just 1.54 percent of the country's geographical area.
