Surovikin had become very powerful since becoming the war commander, reaching out to Putin directly rather than through Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russia's Chief of General Staff.

A Moscow-based expert told Al Jazeera that it was important for the chief of staff himself lead the Ukraine war. According to him, now the war will be bigger and more dangerous. At the same time, many Russian military bloggers believe that all the responsibility is being put on Surovikin for the recent defeat in the war and the soldiers killed in Makievka. They have been made mere pawns.

Surovikin is one of Russia's best-known generals and has been recognized in Russia as the general who made a mark in many of the country's major military operations.
