Now only five days are left in the election for the post of Congress President. In this regard, both the candidates Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge have intensified their election campaigns. Both leaders are putting their respective policies on the public platform that what kind of change they will bring if they become the president. In this sequence, Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday expressed his opinion that if he becomes the Congress chief, he will fully implement the existing constitution of the party and this requires the CWC elections and the revival of the parliamentary board. He said that this election is the first step to taking forward democracy in the party. He said that changes are also needed in the Parliamentary Board which has been dormant for 25 years. In an interview with PTI, Tharoor also said that Congress should decentralize power and truly empower the grassroots functionaries of the party. Tharoor said he would fully implement the Udaipur Declaration, which was unanimously agreed to at the party's Chintan Shivir earlier this year.
Booth, Mandal, and Divisional Presidents will have to be empowered: Tharoor
Tharoor said that Congress should empower the party in the states by giving real powers to the presidents of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), block, Mandal, and booth presidents. Apart from this, the 'one person, one post' and 'one family, one ticket' rules will have to be implemented. We should decentralize power and empower the grassroots functionaries of the party in the true sense. For example, our PCC representatives have had no role for the last 22 years, but have to vote in the upcoming election on 17 October.
Consultation of local leaders should also be included: Tharoor
He said that I want that the elected position of the PCC should be respected by ensuring a place on the platform for the representatives of the PCC. When visiting a local senior leader, their consultation should be included which should precede the selection of candidates for the election.
I've been a big fan of 'Hum', not 'I': Tharoor
Tharoor said that I have been a big fan of UPA's slogan 'Main' Nahi, 'Hum' of 2014. Revamping the organization, empowering grassroots leaders, and involving workers in its success will not only reduce the burden on the new president, but will also help in creating strong leadership at the state level.
