Shock to UN!: Meeting called on climate change, only the countries emitting the most remained missing

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres chairs the Climate Ambition conference. During this conference, an appeal was made to phase out the use of fossil fuels and promote the use of renewable energy. However, major carbon-emitting countries were absent from this conference. In such a situation, questions are being raised about the significance of the conference itself. This conference is taking place at a time when serious effects of climate change are visible in the world and the heat is increasing year by year.

Leaders of major emitting countries remained absent

Only leaders of major carbon-emitting countries did not participate in this major UN conference on the issue of climate change. These also include the leaders of America and China. Major emitting countries also include Britain, Japan, France and India. Only the leaders of the European Union, among the major carbon-emitting countries, were present at the conference. Ahead of the summit, the UN Secretary-General unveiled his Acceleration Agenda, stating that only those working would be allowed to attend the summit. In this meeting, representatives of almost every country stressed the need to phase out fossil fuels. European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Schulze, Chilean President Gabriel Boric, President of Marshall Islands, etc. demanded an immediate ban on the use of fossil fuels.

Canadian PM Justice Trudeau also committed to increasing his country's current methane reduction target to 75 percent by 2030 by tightening oil and gas emissions regulations by the end of the year. The COP28 conference in Dubai is likely to discuss tripling global renewable energy capacity and phasing out fossil fuels.
