PM Modi Congratulates Ranil Wickremesinghe: Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) congratulated the new President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe. PM Modi has sent a congratulatory letter to Ranil Wickremesinghe on his election. PM Modi said that India will support the Sri Lankan people for stability and economic recovery through established democratic means. PM Modi also said that he looks forward to working closely with President Wickremesinghe to strengthen the age-old, close, and friendly ties between India and Sri Lanka.

Significantly, there was a strong protest in Sri Lanka over the economic crisis, after which former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned. The Sri Lankan Parliament on Wednesday elected Rajapaksa's aide and former PM Ranil Wickremesinghe as Rajapaksa's successor. Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned after reaching Singapore. This was the first time in 44 years that the Sri Lankan Parliament directly elected the President.

Sri Lankan Parliament session called

Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency on 17 July after Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka. The first session of the Sri Lankan Parliament after the appointment of new President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been called on Wednesday. During this, the new president can approve the emergency imposed a week ago to end social unrest.

Unrest has spread in the country for several months

In the context of Sri Lankan law, a state of emergency must be approved by parliament within 14 days of its coming into force. Emergency rules empower the police and military to arrest and detain individuals and search private properties. During the worst phase of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, there has been unrest for the last several months.
