The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the Rajasthan government for its affidavit filed regarding payment of compensation to the kin of those who died due to the Kovid epidemic. A bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice Krishna Murari said that the affidavit of the state government is unsatisfactory and the Rajasthan government is not doing any charity. The bench said that the order to pay the compensation has been given by this court. The top court was hearing a plea filed by advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal alleging that the Rajasthan government was not complying with the apex court's 2021 order.
AG's opinion asked in the matter of appointment to Law Commission
The Supreme Court on Monday asked Attorney General R.K. Venkataramani's opinion. The head of the Law Commission has not been appointed since September 2018. Initially, Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justice S. Ravindra Bhat said that it is not inclined to hear the petition and cited the absence of legal provisions relating to an appointment in the Law Commission. But she agreed to the request of the petitioner Ashwini Upadhyay to take the help of the AG.
Refusal to interfere in the firecrackers ban case
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere with the Delhi government's order banning the storage, sale, and use of all types of firecrackers till January 1, 2023, to check air pollution in the national capital. A bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice Krishna Murari expressed concern over the level of pollution during Diwali. The bench told advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha, appearing for BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, "You are a permanent resident of NCR, are you okay? Have you seen pollution? We do not want to increase pollution. We are not rejecting your petition, we will consider it.
Notice to UP government in connection with murders
The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea seeking a probe by a central agency or an anti-terror agency into issues related to extra-judicial killings in the state. Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justice S. Ravindra Bhat directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file a status report on the plea of advocate Anoop Prakash Awasthi. Anoop Prakash himself, who was present in the court, also apprised the bench about the killings in Chitrakoot jail. On July 14 last year, three undertrials were murdered in this jail.
Petition regarding candidates with criminal backgrounds dismissed
The top court on Monday dismissed a plea seeking a direction to the Election Commission to ensure that all political parties publish details about criminal cases of candidates on their official websites.
