TCS AI Hiring: After Workforce Cuts, Company Plans to Build Team of Up to 8,900 AI Engineers

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is doubling down on Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the technology reshapes the global IT industry. Amid growing competition from AI leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic, the country's largest IT services company is planning to build a dedicated team of 5,900 to 8,900 Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) to help enterprise clients deploy AI solutions at scale.

The move comes as TCS accelerates its AI strategy and expands investments in emerging technologies such as cybersecurity, data protection and enterprise AI integration.

TCS Plans Massive AI Hiring Drive

According to TCS CEO K. Krithivasan, the company aims to have 1% to 1.5% of its global workforce working as Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs).

As of June 30, 2026, TCS employed 593,798 people worldwide, making this one of the company's biggest AI-focused talent initiatives.

Alongside hiring, TCS is also evaluating strategic acquisitions in AI, cybersecurity and data protection to strengthen its technology portfolio.

What Are Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs)?

Forward Deployed Engineers are AI specialists who work directly with enterprise customers to integrate AI into real-world business operations.

Their responsibilities include:

Deploying AI models into existing enterprise systems.

Integrating AI with company databases and software.

Customizing AI solutions for different industries.

Improving business processes using generative AI.

For example, if a bank wants to use AI to improve customer support, an FDE studies the bank's technology infrastructure and integrates AI models to meet its specific operational requirements.

Why Are FDEs in Such High Demand?

As businesses increasingly adopt generative AI, organizations require engineers who understand both advanced AI technologies and enterprise software environments.

Rather than simply developing AI models, FDEs ensure those models work effectively within a company's existing infrastructure, making them one of the fastest-growing roles in the AI industry.

Global Salary Packages Reflect Rising Demand

The growing importance of AI deployment engineers is also reflected in international compensation levels.

Recent US job listings indicate that:

Google Cloud has advertised base salaries ranging from $153,000 to $222,000 annually for comparable AI deployment roles.

OpenAI has listed salaries between $198,000 and $335,000 for similar positions in the United States.

Actual compensation varies by location, experience, role and employer, and these figures relate to US-based positions rather than TCS salary announcements.

Why This Could Benefit Indian IT Companies

Industry experts believe the rapid adoption of AI presents a major opportunity for Indian IT services companies.

For decades, firms such as TCS have helped global enterprises implement new technologies. That experience in enterprise integration could become a competitive advantage as companies worldwide accelerate AI adoption.

According to CEO K. Krithivasan, successful AI implementation requires a deep understanding of each client's technology ecosystem—an area where TCS believes it has significant expertise.

He also rejected concerns that AI would eliminate the IT outsourcing model, arguing instead that AI will create new opportunities for companies capable of delivering large-scale enterprise transformation.

TCS Expands AI Partnership With OpenAI

As part of its AI strategy, TCS has entered into an agreement with OpenAI to use ChatGPT Enterprise across its internal operations.

The partnership is expected to improve productivity, software development, knowledge management and employee efficiency through enterprise-grade AI tools.

Infosys Chairman Shares Similar View

Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani has also expressed confidence that AI will not replace India's leading IT companies.

Instead, he believes organizations that quickly adapt AI technologies and align them with business objectives will strengthen their long-term competitiveness and create greater value for clients.
