Officials said such an exercise was mooted in 2018 to validate various measures taken to enhance maritime security after the Mumbai terror attacks. This is its third edition. The first exercise of maritime surveillance took place in January 2019.

The exercise is a preparation for the major 'Theater Level Readiness Operational Exercise' (TROPEX), which is conducted by the Indian Navy every two years.
