US President Donald Trump has welcomed the release of political prisoners in Venezuela, calling it a powerful humanitarian step on Monday. Trump said the process of releasing the prisoners is moving forward rapidly.
What did Trump say?
On the social media platform 'Truth Social', Trump wrote, "I am pleased that Venezuela is rapidly releasing its political prisoners. This pace will increase in the coming days." He also expressed appreciation for Caracas's cooperation, saying, "I want to thank the Venezuelan leadership for agreeing to this powerful humanitarian step."
The number of releases may increase.
Trump's comments came after more than 100 political prisoners were released in Venezuela on Sunday. According to a non-governmental organization, the prisoners are being released gradually under pressure from the United States. The organization confirmed that a total of 104 prisoners were released on Sunday. Earlier that day, there were reports of 80 political prisoners being released. However, this number may still increase.
The atmosphere changed after Maduro's capture.
Earlier this month, US special forces captured leftist leader Nicolás Maduro. Following this, Delcy Rodríguez took over the interim government of Venezuela. She had promised to release Maduro's opponents who were imprisoned.
Families waiting for their loved ones outside the prisons
Speaking to oil workers on Sunday, Rodríguez said that Venezuela will no longer follow Washington's orders. She said, "We should resolve our own internal conflicts. Foreign interference must stop." Officials claim that 626 prisoners have been released since December. However, the organization has recorded only half that number. Human rights groups are unhappy with the slow pace of the process, while the families of the prisoners are waiting for their loved ones outside the prisons.
