The University Grants Commission has taken a tough stand regarding non-refund of hostel and mess fees during the Corona period. The UGC directed all the universities and higher educational institutions of the country to refund the hostel and mess fees taken during Corona at the earliest or adjust the same in the existing fees.
The UGC said that if an institution does not follow the instructions, then action will also be taken against it. UGC Secretary Prof. Rajneesh Jain wrote a letter to the Vice Chancellors of all universities and states on Tuesday. It mentioned that on May 27, 2020, and December 17, 2020, the Commission had earlier written to the universities and institutions in this regard.
Students complained to UGC
Students have complained to the UGC that higher educational institutions charged hostel and mess fees during Corona when educational institutions were closed and they were in homes. In such a situation, when they did not stay in the hostel and did not eat food in the mess, their fees should be refunded. The students in their complaint said that the educational institutions are not refunding their fees. After this, the UGC issued a directive taking a strong stand in this matter.
