Uproar over Women's Reservation: Congress Launches Major Attack on PM; Demands All-Party Meeting and Implementation of Quota from 2029 Itself

The Congress party has launched a frontal attack on the Central Government over the issue of women's reservation. On Tuesday, the Congress once again demanded that the government convene an all-party meeting. The party asserts that the government should discuss implementing the women's quota based on the current strength of the Lok Sabha. The party stated that the time has come for the Prime Minister to atone for his past misdeeds. The Congress alleged that PM Modi has exploited the women of the country to serve his own political agenda.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh articulated his views on the social media platform 'X'. He noted that the election campaign has now concluded. He asserted that, thanks to the unity of the opposition, this maneuver by the Prime Minister has failed. The Prime Minister must now do what the opposition has been consistently demanding since March 2026.

Demand for Implementation Starting in 2029

Ramesh stated that the government should immediately convene an all-party meeting. This meeting should focus on the implementation of the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023' (Women's Reservation Act). He argued that the Act should be made effective starting in 2029, based on the existing number of seats. He recalled that this Act was notified in a hasty and panicked manner late on the night of April 16, 2026. According to the Congress leader, providing reservation based on the current seat count is both feasible and necessary. He alleged that women's reservation was never, in reality, the primary agenda during the special session of Parliament.

Delimitation Identified as the Real Agenda

The Congress alleges that the government's true objective was solely to carry out delimitation. Ramesh claimed that the "game of delimitation" was orchestrated to safeguard the Prime Minister's political survival. He stated that, in order to deliver justice to women, the Prime Minister must now alter his strategy. The Congress has demanded that a bill be introduced—either during the upcoming Monsoon Session or earlier—to implement the quota based on the existing number of seats. From the very outset, the opposition has been opposing the imposition of delimitation under the guise of women's reservation.
