A commission from President Joe Biden has recommended that he consider issuing a memo to the State Department to reduce the waiting time for visa applications for people from countries like India to a maximum of two to four weeks. It is worth mentioning that non-immigrant visas, visitor visas (B1/B2), student visas (F1/F2), and temporary worker visas (H, L, O, P, Q) these days are exceptionally common in many Asian countries including India. long backlog. In the case of India, it has now crossed more than 1,000 days.

 

Emphasis on reducing the increasing delay in visa appointment time

 

The US Embassy previously said wait times for nonimmigrant visa applicants have increased since March 2020 due to workforce reductions and coronavirus-related restrictions in operations. The US embassies in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal have made recommendations to the White House to reduce increasing delays in visa appointment times.

 

State Department should allow virtual interviews: Commission

Propelled by Indian American community leader Ajay Jain Bhaturia, the presidential commission recommended that Biden issue a memo to the State Department to limit visa appointment wait times to a maximum of two to four weeks for countries with significant backlogs, including India, Pakistan Must consider. It suggested that the State Department should take all necessary steps to expedite visa processing in embassies abroad.

 

The Commission said that the State Department should allow virtual interviews. At the same time, the State Department should hire new full-time officials, temporary staff, and contractors for this work or bring back retired consular officers to eliminate the backlog in the respective embassies in Asia.
