The Supreme Court will hear petitions against the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 on Thursday. Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih will hear the case. Earlier, a bench of former CJI Sanjiv Khanna, who retired on May 13, was hearing it.
Will not make appointments in the Central Waqf Council and Boards
Earlier on April 17, the Supreme Court recorded the Central Government's assurance that it would not denotify Waqf properties, including Waqf by User, until May 5 and would not make appointments to the Central Waqf Council and Boards.
This assurance was given when the Supreme Court was told that the law was passed by Parliament after due deliberation, and it should not be stayed without hearing the government's side.
The Center opposed the Supreme Court's proposal.
