Russian troops attacked Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Vladimir Putin's objective behind this was only one - to occupy Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not approve of this, so even after one year, this war is going on.
Both countries suffered a lot in this war. Infrastructure and military equipment were destroyed. There are no firm figures, but it is believed that thousands of soldiers on both sides have been killed in this war. The world praised Ukraine a lot. Many countries including America also provided military help, but always advised Russia to end the war. Said - Nothing will be achieved by war.
According to a New York Times report, Russia has captured most of the Black Sea trade route. Apart from this, Russia has occupied 18% of Ukraine's land since the beginning of the war. 6 major cities of Ukraine – Severodonetsk, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, Mariupol, and Melitopol are situated on this land. These cities control the economy of Ukraine.
reason for possession
The biggest reason Ukraine has survived the war for so long is the arms and economic support from the US and Western countries. On the other side is Russia which has been opposing the support of Western countries to Ukraine from the beginning.
Now by occupying 6 cities of Ukraine, Russia wants to send a message to the western countries that it is difficult to stop it. By doing this Russia will be able to claim that Ukraine is attacking its territory and western countries can also be targeted. In 2014, Russia similarly captured Crimea, which was opposed by Western countries. Even after this, Crimea is occupied by Russia.
Luhansk and Donetsk
After joining Russia, Luhansk, and Donetsk have become a means of weakening US influence in Central Asia. Now both provinces will be Putin's weapon against NATO as well. 3.6 million people living here can be brought into opposition to the Western countries and NATO.
Earlier the name of Donetsk was Stalino. It is an industrial area and is considered best for mineral mining.
There are volcanoes all around it. In Ukraine, this area is called Steel Center. The population is around 20 lakhs.
Luhansk was formerly known as Voroshilovgrad. The population here is 15 lakhs.
Both provinces share a border with Russia on the northern shore of the Black Sea. There is a large reserve of coal here.
Mariupol
Ukraine's Mariupol city is very close to the Russian border. It has long been a strategically important port on the Azov Sea and connects it to the Black Sea.
Mariupol Port handles over 10 million metric tons of cargo. Also, it is a very important port in terms of freight.
After occupying here, Russia can now build a bridge to connect Moscow to Donbass's Donetsk and Luhansk to Crimea.
There are two big steel companies here. Their names are Ilyich Steel and Iron Works and Azovstal. A large part of Ukraine's total steel is produced from here.
Zaporizhzhya
This part is also strategically important for Russia as it is just 200 km away from Crimea.
Energy is supplied to Europe from Zaporizhia. In such a situation, after the Russian occupation, Ukraine will face difficulties in generating revenue, due to which Ukraine's economy will be in danger.
Zaporizhia is the nuclear power hub of Europe. Here is the largest nuclear plant in Europe. By including this part in Russia, Putin can make his country the world's largest nuclear power.
severodonetsk
It is called the Chemical Industry Center of Ukraine. Here is the largest lot chemical plant in Ukraine.
Fertilizers are made here and are exported worldwide.
Strategically it is very important. Weapons are delivered to the military of Ukraine through the highway passing through here.
First, capture then withdrawal of troops
Many cities in Ukraine were captured by Russia but later called back its troops from here. Russia, which claimed to end the war by winning in 15 days, ordered the withdrawal of its army from Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, only a month after the attack. Soldiers had also started going back from here, but after 8 months in October, Russia intensified the attacks here.
Although they have not been able to capture Kyiv yet.
Russian troops occupied Izum in March. After 7 months in September, the Ukrainian army freed it from Russia, after which the Russian troops were withdrawn.
Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, was captured by Russia in March. Russian troops were withdrawn from here in October.
Kherson was captured by Russia on March 2, only 5 days after the battle. After 7 months, on 9 November, Putin called back his army from here.
When Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, it made it clear that it would destroy Ukraine's economy. Under this strategy, the Russian army heavily bombarded Snake Island and captured it. Russian troops had withdrawn from here in July.
The whole world in favor of ending the war
A year later, Russian forces failed to capture Ukraine. During this, European countries including India, and America asked Putin to end the war. Israel and Turkey had spoken of mediation. But all this remained inconclusive.
