BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar announced the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025, but this team selection raised many questions. The most shocking decision was to drop young opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill returned and was also given the responsibility of vice-captain. Former Indian off-spinner R Ashwin also expressed his displeasure over Yashasvi's dropping.
R Ashwin is furious over the decision to drop Yashasvi Jaiswal
Actually, Yashasvi Jaiswal (Yashasvi Jaiswal Asia Cup 2025), who made it to the T20 World Cup 2024 as India's backup opener. Now, suddenly, he surprised everyone by not including him in the Indian team squad for the Asia Cup. This decision has had a big impact on his career.
After his debut in Test cricket, he performed consistently well and proved to be India's most successful young batsman in recent times. Be it Test or T20, he proved himself on every occasion. Still, being out of the team is a big setback for him.
Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin openly expressed his displeasure over the selection. On his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that Jaiswal's exclusion from the team could affect his style of playing. Ashwin said,
"Now, Yashasvi may start playing for himself instead of playing for the team. This may affect his morale."
Ashwin further said that as soon as Jaiswal got a chance in Test cricket, he took it with both hands. Whatever format you gave him a chance to play, he performed brilliantly, and what else can one do apart from this brilliant performance?, But still he did not get a chance.
Referring to Jaiswal's T20 strike rate (165), he said that it is difficult to find players who play selflessly for the team. According to Ashwin,
"Many batsmen play to save their average and numbers. But Yashasvi always plays shots when the opportunity arises, gives priority to the team. Despite this, it is very unfortunate to drop him. This shows that T20 has now become a format where players play to save their place."
