Arvind Kejriwal government's 'Red Light on Car Off' campaign is once again in discussion in Delhi. The Delhi government has recently sent the file related to this campaign to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for reconsideration. A day earlier, there was talk of the Lieutenant Governor sending the file related to this campaign to the Delhi government, but now the Delhi government has again sent this file to the LG for consideration. Sources have given information in this regard on Monday. A day earlier, the LG had asked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to review the campaign. Explain that under this campaign, the drivers were to be made aware that when they stand to wait after the red light near the traffic signal, they turn off the engine of the vehicle.
A source said, “We have sent this file to LG for reconsideration. Along with this, the government has also sent important facts in favor of this campaign, which proves that this campaign will benefit a lot. A similar campaign is being run in 40 cities of the country. Even similar campaigns are going on in the US and London. According to CRRI, only 20 percent of people turn off the engine at the traffic signal but during the campaign, we found that 80 percent of the people switched off the engine at the red signal.
This campaign was first launched on October 16, 2020. On behalf of the Delhi government, it was said that the purpose of this campaign was to reduce the pollution caused by vehicles in the capital. Under this, the drivers were made aware that they should keep the engine of the vehicle off while waiting after the red light in the traffic. Environment Minister Gopal Rai had said on Saturday that the Delhi government would answer all the questions raised by the Lieutenant Governor regarding this campaign and would send it back to him for his approval. Gopal Rai had accused the LG of doing politics on this issue.
According to the information, earlier in his noting on the file, the Lieutenant Governor had written that the operation is nothing more than endangering the civil defense personnel. There is no evidence anywhere in the file that it can be effective in preventing contamination. The Lieutenant Governor assesses that it is dangerous to make civil defense personnel stand at the signal amidst severe pollution. The Lt Governor has also underlined that the results of past campaigns are not reflected in the proposal and no impact assessment report has been provided to support the impact of earlier campaigns to improve air quality in the city.
