Why are so many child deaths due to Covid-19 in Brazil?

It has been more than a year since the Coronavirus pandemic began and at this time the number of deaths in Brazil has been steadily increasing.

There is evidence that teenagers and young people rarely die of Coronavirus infection, but so far 1,300 children have died due to the virus in Brazil.

A doctor refused to see Jessica Rickert's one-year-old son infected with the corona, saying that her symptoms did not resemble the profile of the virus. Two months later, that child died of the virus.

Jessica, a teacher by profession, underwent continuous treatment of fertility for two years and was failing in it, but eventually, she became pregnant.

She says, "His name was associated with lights. He was like a light in our lives. He showed us the happiness that we had not even imagined."

He first noticed the problem of loss of appetite in his son Lukas because he used to eat well before.

Jessica first thought it was because of a tooth coming out, but Lucas's godmother, who is his nurse, said that she might have a sore throat, but after that Lucas started having fever and had difficulty breathing.

Difficulties increased due to not conducting the Covid test

Jessica takes him to the hospital and asks him to do the Covid test.

Jessica says, "When the doctor checked oxygen through the oximeter, his level was 86%. Now I know that this is not normal."

But he did not have a high fever, so the doctor said, "There is nothing to worry about and there is no need for a Covid test. Perhaps it is a minor sore throat."

The doctor told Jessica that Covid-19 is extremely rare among children and sent them home with some antibiotics. Despite these doubts, Lucas could be tested from his private place.

Jessica says that by the last day of her 10-day course of antibiotics, her symptoms continued to subside but her fatigue persisted, causing her to worry about the coronavirus.

She says, "I sent many videos to his godmother, my family, my mother-in-law and many people, then he said that I was thinking too much about it. He refused to watch the news because he believed that it Confusing me. But I knew that my son was not able to breathe on his own. "

It was in May 2020 when the coronavirus epidemic continued to spread and two people died in the Sierra city of Tamboril in northeast Brazil.

"Everyone knew each other and the whole city was shocked."

Jessica's husband, Israel, was worried that the risk of infection would increase if he went to another hospital and Jessica and Lucas would become infected with the virus.

But for several weeks, Lukas started sleeping more, then after eating food on June 3, Lukus started having frequent vomiting.

Jessica goes to the local hospital and gets her Covid test done.

The godmother of Lukas who used to work there told that the Covid test positive of Lukus has come.

MIS status in most children

Jessica says that there was not even a resuscitator (artificial breathing machine) in the hospital at that time.

Lukas was sent to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Sobral, which was two hours away from there. There, it was discovered that Lucas had multi-system inflammatory syndrome (MIS).

This is a condition in which immunity against the virus is at its peak due to which inflammation in vital organs occurs.

Experts say that this condition can come in children over six weeks of age after being infected with the coronavirus, but it is extremely rare.

But epidemiologist Dr. Fatima Marinho of the University of São Paulo says that he has seen the highest number of cases of MIS during the epidemic so far but it is not responsible for all deaths.

When Lucas was admitted to the hospital, Jessica was not allowed to stay in the same room. He called his sister-in-law to him.

She says, "We could hear the sound of the beep of the machine until the machine is stopped. The sound of the beep keeps on coming. We know when a person dies. After a few minutes, the machine will shut down and run again." Started and we started crying. "

The doctor said that Lucas had a heart attack but he managed to save him.

Pediatrician doctor Menuela Monte treated Lucas for a month in Sobral's ICU. She says that she is surprised that Lukas's condition was very worrying because there was no reason for him to have such severe symptoms.

Pediatrician Lohona Tavares at Albert Sabin Children's Hospital in Fortaleza, the state capital, says that children who were found infected with Covid also had other diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular and obesity.

But this was not the case with Lucas.

Lucas stayed in ICU for 33 days and Jessica was able to meet him only 3 times. Lucas needed immunoglobulin medicine for his heart, which is very expensive, but fortunately, a patient gave a dose of that medicine to the hospital.

Lucas was extremely ill, so he needed a second dose of immunoglobulin. Red marks started appearing on his body and he started getting a fever. He needed support to breathe.

When Lukas got well and he started breathing on his own, the doctor removed the tube. He makes a video call to Jessica and Israel so that Lucas doesn't feel alone after he regains consciousness.

"She started crying when she heard our voice," says Jessica.

Is there a lower risk of Covid on children?

Doctor Fatima Marinho says that it is a misconception that there is no danger of Covid on children. Their research has found that a large number of children and children have been infected by this virus.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, from February 2020 to March 15, 2021, Covid-19 has killed at least 852 children up to the age of nine and 518 children up to the age of one year.

However, Doctor Marinho estimates that this number may be doubled. They believe that the numbers are also low due to the serious problem of decreasing the covid testing.

Doctor Marinho estimates that the deaths from unspecified acute respiratory syndrome during the epidemic are 10 times higher than in the previous year.

Combining these figures, she says that the virus has killed 2,060 children under the age of 9, including 1,302 infants.

After all, why is this happening?

Experts believe that the maximum increase of corona cases in Brazil may also be due to the infants and children being infected here.

Renato Kafuri, President of the Scientific Department of Immunization of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, says, "We are getting a lot more cases and more people are getting hospitalized and more deaths are happening in people of all ages, including children." If the epidemic had been controlled, these conditions could have been reduced. "

Brazil is currently second in the world in cases of corona infection. Due to this, the health system in the country has collapsed. There is a shortage of oxygen supply all over the country, there is a shortage of basic medicines and ICU beds are not empty in many hospitals of the country.

At the same time, Brazilian President Zaire Bolsonaru has opposed the lockdown and a new variant called P.1 has been detected in the country which is deemed more contagious. The death toll in the last month has been double compared to any month since the onset of the epidemic.

Due to lack of testing, the problem of getting more cases in children is coming out.

Marinho says that children are getting to know about Covid when they are getting seriously ill. She says, "We are facing a serious problem of catching cases. We do not have enough tests for the general public and too few for children. There is a delay in finding out about the disease which reason is the delay in the treatment of children. "

The reason for the late detection of this disease in children is not only less testing but also the symptoms of children infected with Covid-19 are different from the symptoms of young age group of different age due to which it is difficult to detect.

When to ask for help?

When a child is infected with the coronavirus, it is considered less severe. If your child is not well then he doesn't need to have coronavirus disease.

The Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health has advised family members to seek emergency help only if their children have this problem:

When red marks appear on his body or he feels unusually cold on touching.

He is stopping in breathing or is breathing irregularly or while breathing, he is emitting strange sounds.

There is difficulty in breathing or get excited or do not react to anything.

Lips turn blue, dull, or look distraught.
