India has won two worlds since 2007. One ODI and one T20 World Cup. Yuvraj Singh was made the Player of the Tournament in both. The explosive batting at number-4 was their specialty of Yuvi. Had the top order performed well, Yuvi would have taken the team to even greater heights by coming at No.4. If the top order failed, Yuvraj used to handle the innings.
Yuvi was diagnosed with cancer after the 2011 World Cup. He returned to the Indian team after successful treatment but could not leave the same impact as before. In both ODI and T20, he played his last match in 2017.
Since then, the Indian team was searching for Yuvraj's replacement at number-4 in WHITE BALL cricket. During this, a total of 18 players, new and old, were tried on this number but no one could prove himself even a quarter of Yuvraj. These 18 players also include stars like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Apart from these, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, and Vijay Shankar were also tried but without success.
Now that wait seems to be over. The name of that ray of hope is Suryakumar Yadav. Unlike Yuvi, Suriya is a right-handed batsman, yet he has four such qualities that make him the perfect number-4 and the true successor to Yuvi. Let us know about these features.
USP No.-1: Can play shots on every end of the gound
Just as Yuvraj Singh could hit both off-side and on-sign, Suryakumar also can hit boundaries at each end of the ground. The field is often wide in the middle overs. Therefore, the batsman who has more range of shots is also more likely to be successful.
USP No. 2: Amazing straight rate
Yuvraj batted at a strike rate of 88 in ODIs and 137 in T20 Internationals. It would be called the best for his era. Suryakumar proves to be even better in this case. He has so far scored 103 runs in seven ODIs and 177 in 19 T20Is.
USP No. 3: Comfortable against both pace and spin
Yuvraj Singh was the best batsman against the pace attack. In Tests, he had trouble against spin, but in ODIs and T20s, he could overcome the challenge of spin. Suryakumar has a similar mastery against both pace and spin.
USP number-4: adept at handling pressure
Batsmen playing at number 4 have to prepare themselves for every situation. Two wickets of the team may fall when 150 runs have been scored or the score may be 0/2. The batsman who has more ability to handle the pressure is more successful at number 4. Suryakumar has shown a good game in many pressure matches while playing for Mumbai Indians. He is also known to be a pressure-hander in domestic cricket.
