
Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswa Bhushan Harichandan has approved the renaming of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada as Dr YSR University of Health Sciences. The order in this regard was passed by the Andhra Pradesh government on Monday, October 31. The law was amended by the assembly to change the name of the university. Governor Vishwabhushan Harichandan approved the amendment to the law introduced by the Assembly on Monday. After the approval of the Governor, Principal Secretary Krishna Babu issued orders to implement the amended law. After which now Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences in Andhra Pradesh will be called as Dr. YSR Health Sciences University.
Bill was brought in the house
In fact, the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government in both the houses of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature brought a bill to rename the NTR University of Health Sciences (UHS) to YSR UHS. At the end of the five-day monsoon session, the Legislative Council cleared the bill amid strong opposition from the opposition Telugu Desam Party and others. Earlier, the Assembly had passed the bill after 12 members of the Telugu Desam Party were "suspended" from the House.
CM justified changing the name
Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy justified renaming UHS after his late father YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the first such university in the country established in 1986 as the brainchild of Telugu legend and former Chief Minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan said "My father was an MBBS doctor. He was the one who started schemes like Arogya Shree, 108 (Ambulance) and 104 (Mobile Clinic). He was the Chief Minister between 2004 and 2009 in the state for three new Medical colleges were set up. CM Jagan Mohan said that his government is now opening 17 new medical colleges. Hence, 20 out of the total 28 medical colleges in the state are due to YSR or his son. He said TDP during his rule CM Jagan said that the decision to rename UHS was taken after thorough consultation.
