A few weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, the Central Government announced to implementation of the law to give Indian citizenship to people coming from other countries across the country. Through the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), citizenship will be given to people coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who have been oppressed. This law is being both welcomed and opposed. The Congress party has declared this law unconstitutional. The party has questioned why this law is being implemented 51 months after the bill was passed by Parliament.
Why did the law come into effect after four years and three months?
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said the state governments of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have made it clear that CAA will not be implemented in their states. He said we are against CAA because giving citizenship based on religion is against the Constitution. This law has also been challenged in the Supreme Court. He questioned why it took 4 years and 3 months for the Central Government to implement this law.
Government appeals to needy people applying for citizenship
It is noteworthy that after issuing the notification of implementation of CAA on Monday, the Central Government also released a list of 29 documents. The Home Ministry has informed which documents can be used to provide proof of country of origin and date of arrival in India. The government has appealed to applicants to avoid rumors and apply for citizenship online based on whatever documentary proof is available.
Karnataka Chief Minister also strongly opposed CAA
On the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said, the central government has implemented the CAA as the general elections are approaching. He also questioned why the BJP-led central government was silent till now (51 months after the bill was passed). Siddaramaiah said, he strongly opposes giving citizenship based on religion.
