Former Indian captain Virat Kohli was the highest run-scorer in the 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups. However, in the next T20 T20 World Cup 2022, he may lose his place in the team. Virat scored his last century in international cricket in 2019. Since then he has been struggling continuously to score runs. In 2022, Virat has played four T20 Internationals so far, in which he has scored 81 runs. During this, he averaged 20.25 and had a strike rate of 128. However, despite the consistently poor form, the BCCI is not throwing Virat out of the T20 team.
Meanwhile, former England cricketer Monty Panesar believes that cricket is not the reason behind Virat's exclusion from the team but it has something to do with the financial aspect of the game as well. The former England spinner feels that Virat is one of the best-selling cricketers in the world and dropping the India batsman from the national team will cause a huge financial loss to the board.
Monty Panesar told The Times of India, 'The trouble here is that he is the best-selling cricketer in the world. He is probably the one who has found that place after Sachin Tendulkar. So, from a financial point of view, of course, everyone just wants to see your Virat Kohli bat or see him on the field. Fans love him very much. We all just love Virat and his intensity. Sometimes, it is borderline but they are highly praised in England. So, from the BCCI's point of view, they will have to sit and decide.
The former spinner said, 'When Virat Kohli plays, the stadium is full with the sponsor. Other boards benefit greatly from Virat Kohli's play. But is Virat that good for India right now? This is the biggest question that BCCI needs to solve. When it comes to big tournaments like T20 World Cup or (ODI) World Cup, they probably make more money. It is going to be very difficult for players like coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma.
