Riots in Belgium on defeat in Football World Cup: Fans burnt vehicles when the world's number-2 team lost

Riots broke out in Belgium after losing 2-0 to Morocco in the ongoing Football World Cup in Qatar. Fans ransacked and burnt vehicles in the capital Brussels.

 

Police had to use tear gas and water cannon to control the angry fans. A policeman said that 12 people have been detained. Some fans were vandalizing with Moroccan flags in their hands. Some protesters set ablaze cars and some electric scooters. Riots took place in many places.

 

After the violence broke out, the mayor of Brussels, Philippe Clos, appealed to people not to gather in the cities. Close said- 'The police officers are doing their best to maintain order on the streets. Metro and traffic also had to be stopped for some time. They are not fans, they are rioters.

 

At the same time, Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden said- 'It is sad to see how a handful of people are worsening the situation.'

The effect of the violence in Belgium was also seen in the neighboring Netherlands. The police there said- 'Violence broke out in Rotterdam and anti-riot officers tried to stop a football supporter group of about 500 people. Those who pelted stones at the police and indulged in arson and vandalism. Two police officers have been injured in the incident.

 

Unrest was reported from several cities late Sunday evening. According to media reports, there is an atmosphere of unrest in the country's capital Amsterdam and The Hague.

 

The World number-2 team could not even score a goal

The world's number two team Belgium could not score a single goal in the match on Sunday. It was defeated 2-0 by the 22nd-ranked team Morocco. The match was named after the players who came in for substitution. Abdelhamid Sabiri, who came on the pitch in the 69th minute, scored in the 73rd minute.
