Indian women's cricket team coach Amol Majumdar wished Pakistan the best of luck ahead of their Women's T20 World Cup 2024 match against New Zealand on Monday. India is on the verge of elimination after losing to Australia on Sunday. However, they can still make it to the semi-finals, but Pakistan will have to register a win over New Zealand.
India would want Pakistan to beat New Zealand to reach the last four of the tournament. This fact was mentioned by a journalist to Indian coach Amol Majumdar during a press conference. Majumdar smiled and said that he would like to wish Pakistan the best of luck in the match. The Indian coach also said that the Indian team would be watching the match closely. He said, 'This is a good question. I want to wish Pakistan the best of luck. That's all I can say. But we will be watching the match closely, that's for sure.'
'We are all in this together'
There were many turning points in the India-Australia match. Team India dropped a few catches and Shreyanka Patil's last two overs conceded 14 and 12 runs. However, the Indian coach said that he did not want to point to any particular moment as the turning point, and in the end, it was a collective effort. Majumdar hoped that the Indian team would learn from this experience and the results would go in their favor in the coming days.
He said, 'At this point, I would not like to talk about the 14th or 16th over precisely. It is a collective effort. We are all in this together. We said at the beginning of the match that whatever happens, this group is special. We care about each other. I am sure in the coming days you will find that the results are going in our favor. I would not like to talk about those overs or those dropped catches. It happens in the game. We just want to learn from this experience and disappointment.' India ended the group stage with four points from four matches.
Australia won the match by nine runs.
Australia's women's team secured its place in the semi-finals by winning by nine runs against India on Sunday. It became the first team to reach the semi-finals from Group A. At the same time, this defeat has made India's path difficult. Before this match, India's net run rate was +0.576. Now it has remained only +0.322. At the same time, Australia is at the top of the points table with eight points and a net run rate of +2.223. New Zealand's team is in third place whose net run rate is +0.282. If they win against Pakistan in their fourth match, then the Kiwi team will reach the second position and qualify for the semi-finals. In this situation, India will have to pray for Pakistan's victory.
In this match played in Sharjah, Australia scored 151 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs. In response, the Indian team could only score 142 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs. India had to chase the target in 10.2 overs or before to surpass Australia's net run rate. On the other hand, if India lost, it had to ensure that their score was more than 139 runs, or else their net run rate could have been less than New Zealand's.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's half-century innings did not work. India needed 14 runs in the last over. Harmanpreet was on the wicket, but India lost the match by losing four wickets in Sutherland's over. In reply to Australia's 151 runs for 8 wickets, India scored 142 runs for nine wickets. Harmanpreet remained unbeaten on 54 runs with the help of six fours in 47 balls. She shared a 63-run partnership in 55 balls with Deepti Sharma (29) for the fourth wicket. When 12 runs were scored in the 18th over and 14 runs in the 19th over, it seemed that victory was going to be achieved, but it did not happen. Sophie Molyneux, who took two wickets for 32 runs, became the Player of the Match. Apart from her, Annabel Sutherland took two wickets for Australia. Meanwhile, Megan and Ashley took one wicket each.
