Air India has introduced a new ‘Basic Fare’ category for domestic flight passengers, offering a lower-cost travel option in exchange for fewer onboard amenities. Under the new fare structure, passengers will no longer receive complimentary meals during their flight, although other essential travel benefits will remain available.
The airline said the new fare category has been launched as a pilot project on select domestic routes and is aimed at providing customers with greater flexibility and more affordable ticket options.
What Is Air India’s New Basic Fare?
According to Air India, the ‘Basic Fare’ is designed for travelers who prioritize lower ticket prices and do not require additional in-flight services such as complimentary meals.
The airline clarified that the new fare option is entirely optional. Passengers can continue booking tickets under the existing ‘Value’, ‘Classic’, and ‘Flex’ fare categories, which still include complimentary meals and additional travel benefits.
The introduction of the Basic Fare comes as airlines worldwide seek to balance rising operational costs while offering passengers more personalized travel choices.
Amenities Included in the Basic Fare
Passengers booking tickets under the new Basic Fare category will continue to receive several essential travel services.
Basic Fare Benefits:
Up to 15 kg check-in baggage allowance
Up to 7 kg cabin baggage allowance
Complimentary beverages such as tea or coffee during the flight
Access to standard flight services and safety amenities
What Is Not Included?
Complimentary meal service will not be provided
Additional services may be available at extra cost depending on the route and travel requirements
The airline emphasized that the Basic Fare is targeted at budget-conscious travelers who are willing to pay separately for optional services such as meals.
Complimentary Meals Continue Under Other Fare Categories
Air India confirmed that passengers selecting the Value, Classic, and Flex fare categories will continue to enjoy complimentary meal services and other premium travel benefits.
These fare options offer varying levels of flexibility, baggage allowances, seat selection privileges, and additional customer conveniences depending on the ticket type.
The airline has assured passengers that the introduction of the Basic Fare will not impact the benefits currently offered under its existing fare structure.
Pilot Project Based on Passenger Demand
Air India stated that the Basic Fare has been introduced on a trial basis and will initially operate on selected domestic routes. During the pilot phase, the airline will evaluate passenger feedback, booking trends, and overall demand before deciding whether to expand the offering permanently across its network.
The airline believes many travelers, particularly those taking short domestic journeys, may prefer lower fares over complimentary meal services.
Why Air India Introduced the Basic Fare
Industry experts note that airlines are increasingly adopting unbundled pricing models, allowing passengers to pay only for the services they need. Such models help carriers manage rising fuel prices, operational expenses, and competitive market pressures while offering travelers more affordable ticket options.
The move aligns Air India's strategy with global airline trends, where low-cost and full-service carriers are introducing flexible fare structures to cater to diverse customer preferences.
