SC on PFI Popular Front of India (PFI), an organization banned under UAPA for anti-national activities, has received a setback from the Supreme Court today. The Supreme Court has refused to hear PFI's petition. PFI had challenged the ban in the petition.
Supreme Court advice
The Supreme Court refused to hear the petition (the Supreme Court rejected the PFI petition) and said that this matter should have gone to the High Court first. The Supreme Court said that you have the freedom to approach the High Court. PFI's plea against the UAPA tribunal's order confirming the Centre's ban was rejected.
What did the bench say?
A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi said it would be appropriate for PFI to first approach the High Court against the tribunal order.
Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for PFI, agreed with the court's view that the organization should have first moved to the high court and then the apex court. After this, the bench rejected the petition but allowed PFI to approach the High Court.
What did PFI appeal to in the petition?
In its petition, PFI had challenged the March 21 order of the UAPA tribunal. Under this, the Centre's decision of 27 September 2022 was confirmed.
The Center had banned PFI for five years for alleged links with global terrorist organizations like ISIS and attempts to spread communal hatred in the country.
