Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially introduced a new Aadhaar application to replace the older mAadhaar app.
The upgraded app has now been fully rolled out and comes with enhanced security features, improved privacy controls, and paperless identity verification capabilities.
India’s Aadhaar system is currently considered the world’s largest biometric identification program. Since its launch in 2009, more than 1.44 billion Aadhaar numbers have reportedly been issued across the country.
The newly launched Aadhaar app aims to provide users with safer and more controlled access to their digital identity information.
New Aadhaar App Focuses on Privacy and Data Protection
According to UIDAI, the new Aadhaar app has been designed in compliance with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection framework and follows strict data minimization principles.
One of the biggest changes introduced in the new app is selective information sharing.
Users can now select to share only the necessary Aadhaar details required for a particular verification process instead of revealing full identity information.
This feature is expected to improve user privacy during:
Hotel check-ins
Hospital registrations
Identity verification processes
Service authentication procedures
Officials say the app reduces the risk of unnecessary data exposure and strengthens digital privacy protections.
Key Features of the New Aadhaar App
The new Aadhaar app introduces several advanced security and convenience features for users.
Major Features Include:
QR code-based verification
Face authentication login
Biometric lock and unlock functionality
Aadhaar usage history tracking
Secure digital identity verification
Multi-profile support on a single device
Users can also monitor Aadhaar activity history to identify any suspicious or unauthorized usage.
Additionally, the app supports up to five Aadhaar profiles on one smartphone, allowing families to manage multiple Aadhaar accounts conveniently.
No Need to Transfer Old mAadhaar Data
UIDAI has clarified that users do not need to migrate or transfer their data manually from the older mAadhaar application.
Instead, users can simply register on the new Aadhaar app as fresh users and activate their accounts through authentication steps.
The app allows login using either:
Aadhaar number
Face authentication system
Step-by-Step Guide to Set Up the New Aadhaar App
Users can follow these steps to activate and start using the new Aadhaar app:
Step 1: Download the Official App
Download the official Aadhaar app from:
Google Play Store
Apple App Store
Step 2: Select Language and Enter Mobile Number
Open the app, select your preferred language, and enter the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar account.
Step 3: Complete OTP Verification
An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to continue the setup process.
Step 4: Perform Face Authentication
Users will then need to complete face authentication using the smartphone camera for secure identity verification.
Step 5: Create a Security PIN
Set up a 6-digit PIN for app security. Users may also enable biometric unlocking for additional protection.
Step 6: Enter Aadhaar Details
Finally, enter your Aadhaar information and complete another OTP verification process.
Once completed, the Aadhaar account becomes fully active and accessible within the app.
Aadhaar Becomes More Digital and Secure
The rollout of the new Aadhaar app reflects UIDAI’s growing focus on secure digital identity management and user privacy.
Experts believe the app could significantly improve how Indians manage Aadhaar-based verification while reducing paperwork and minimizing unnecessary data sharing.
With face authentication, QR-based verification, biometric security, and family profile management features, the new Aadhaar app marks a major upgrade over the previous mAadhaar platform.
Users are advised to download only the official application from verified app stores to avoid fraud or fake Aadhaar-related apps.
