COP27: India worried over the arbitrariness of rich countries, said- responsibility of climate change is being put on developing countries

Like every time, this time also in the climate change conference, the rich countries have tried to put pressure on the developing countries for environmental imbalance. However, many developing countries, including India, remained adamant about not accepting his proposals. India on Thursday opposed the efforts of the developed world at the ongoing UN climate summit in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh. Sources said India said rich countries do not want to reduce emissions by changing their lifestyles and are looking for cheaper solutions abroad. India said that developed countries are promoting the process of shrinking the agricultural sector, but we oppose it.

A source in the Indian delegation said that while expressing concern over the draft decision text prepared by the Koronivia Joint Work on the agriculture sector, India said that the developed countries are on the verge of a reduction in the agriculture sector. Pro-poor and pro-farmers are stalling the decision by insisting on expanding the Thus the foundation of food security in the world is being compromised.

India said that at every climate summit, developed countries seek to change the goals of the international climate regime by using means to divert attention from the critical issue of reducing their responsibilities arising from their historical emissions. These rich countries want to abdicate their historical responsibility for climate change.

Developed countries have been pushing for the inclusion of terms like 'major emitter' and 'top emitter' in the joint declaration of the convention, but India has rejected it outright. This information has been revealed by quoting a member of the Indian delegation. India says developed countries want all 20 top emitters, including India and China, to cut their emission levels and aim to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

India's taunt of rich countries

Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said some of the major unresolved issues are emission reduction programs, second periodic review, and global targets on adaptation, loss, and damage. He clarified India's position and said that the historical contribution and responsibilities of developed countries in environmental imbalance cannot be ignored. He said that India cannot support the argument of the top emitter.

No responsibility can be imposed on any country based on such categories, which have no mention in the Paris Agreement. He said that before deciding on the cover text, it is also necessary to assess the circumstances before 2020.

European Union came along

The European Union is also seen standing with India on important issues during the Climate Conference. Even during the first week of the climate talks, India, backed by other developing countries, blocked an effort by richer countries to focus on all the top 20 emitters of carbon dioxide. India said that no specific resource, area, or gas could be singled out for action. This side of India has also been supported by the European Union.

UN chief voices concern over the threat to split COP27 talks

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Thursday that COP27 is due to conclude in 24 hours, but countries remain divided on several key issues, including "loss and damage". Speaking at the International Conference Center in Sharm el-Sheikh, Guterres urged all parties to rise to the urgency of the hour and agree on real solutions to solve humanity's greatest challenge.

Guterres told reporters that "COP27 is due to close in 24 hours and the parties remain divided on several important issues, as referred to earlier. Clearly, as in the past, tensions between the North and the South will further develop and There has been a breakdown of trust between emerging economies. This is not the time for finger-pointing. The blame game is a recipe for mutually assured destruction."

He said that "I have come here to appeal to all parties to rise to this moment and the greatest challenge facing humanity." The UN chief called on all countries to take the kind of meaningful action that people and the planet so desperately need. He underlined that "the world is watching and there is a simple message: face the problem and act".

India is fighting its part to save the world: Bhupendra

Union Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav said that India is determined to deal with the existential crisis faced by humanity due to climate change. India will continue to fight at its level to protect the earth, the only home of a man in the infinite universe. Describing global warming, and extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and storms as nature's last warning, he said that without equality and international cooperation, solving global environmental problems is not possible.

He was speaking at the COP27 session on Accelerating Resilient Infrastructure in Small Island Developing States (SIDs). Citing the IPCC report of the United Nations, he said that India is one of those countries which is very sensitive to climate change. We sympathize with the island nations, as we share their concerns as a country with 7,500 km of coastline and over 1,000 maritime islands.

I wish the world follows the path of India

Citing per capita emissions, Yadav said India's emissions are still only about one-third of the global average. If the whole world had followed India's path in terms of per capita emissions, the climate crisis would not have arisen today. To effectively deal with the climate crisis, he said the spirit of leaving no one behind is vital, as no country can succeed alone. Some countries are fortunate in terms of developed and geographical conditions in this matter, they will have to go ahead and help.

Iris is an important initiative

COP27 saw the launch of the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) initiative launched by the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) last week. Presenting the vision document of the initiative, Bhupendra Yadav said that IRIS is a major strategic initiative designed to be a tool to facilitate climate-friendly solutions for the most vulnerable countries.

What is an iris?

It is a joint platform to learn, share and implement Omni-capable infrastructure solutions, citing SIDS. It was conceptualized by India, Australia, Jamaica, Mauritius, and Fiji during the COP26 summit. This year, the target of launching projects under this has been reached.
