Gadkari said that the economic reforms initiated by Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister in 1991 gave a new direction to India as it ushered in a liberal economy. Gadkari was addressing the 'TIOL Awards 2022' ceremony.

The country will remain indebted to Manmohan Singh.

He said- 'India needs a liberal economic policy, to benefit the poor as well. The economic reforms initiated by the then Finance Minister Manmohan Singh in 1991 gave a new direction to India. The country will remain indebted to him for economic reforms. I was a minister in Maharashtra in the 90s. We tried hard to raise money to build roads. We were able to raise funds for road projects only because of the economic reforms initiated by Manmohan Singh.
