All-rounder Washington Sundar took four wickets to put India in a great position on the fourth day of the third Test match here on Sunday, but while chasing the target of 193 runs, England took four wickets for 58 runs till stumps of the visiting team. India could not get off to a good start, and in the second over, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed without opening the account. Karun Nair (14) and captain Shubman Gill (06) fell prey to Brydon Carse. Nightwatchman Akash Deep was stumped as soon as Ben Stokes dismissed him. The fifth day of the match will be exciting as India need 135 runs and England need six wickets to win. KL Rahul (33 runs off 47 balls) is at the crease. However, the question arises, who will be India's troubleshooter? Among the remaining players, only Rishabh Pant is the main batsman. Apart from this, the rest are all-rounders or bowlers. Team India has a lot of expectations from Pant, and he has taken India out of difficult situations before. Will he be able to do a miracle like Gabba once again? It will be interesting to see.
Record of Pant, Rahul, Jadeja, Sundar, and Nitish
Pant has batted in 17 Tests so far in the fourth innings of any Test i.e., while chasing the target. In its 11 innings, he has scored 466 runs at an average of 51.77. These include three half-centuries and a century. While batting in the fourth innings, he bats with 83.6 percent control. Apart from him, no other batsman in the current line-up has such a record in the fourth innings. KL Rahul has an average of 26.42 in the fourth innings. He has scored 370* runs in 18 innings. These include a century and a half-century, while Ravindra Jadeja scored 153 runs in 12 innings in the fourth at an average of 15.30. Washington Sundar has scored 60 runs in five innings in the fourth innings at an average of 15.00. On the other hand, Nitish has batted only once in the fourth innings so far and has scored one run in it.
Team India's record while chasing a score of less than 200
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also did not have a better average than Pant in the fourth innings. Kohli scored 1102 runs in 32 such innings at an average of 42.38. On the other hand, Rohit scored 490 runs in 22 such innings at an average of 27.22. Team India will have the highest expectations from the pair of Pant and Rahul on the fifth day. They will have to take India close to the target. Team India's record while chasing a target of 200 or less in Tests is excellent. Before this match, it had chased a target of 200 or less 13 times and had won nine times. The Indian team lost in one match, and three Tests were drawn.
India's record while chasing at Lord's and England
However, India's run chase at Lord's and in England has not been that great. Team India has won only three Tests at Lord's, and out of these, it chased the score only in 1986. Then, Team India, captained by Kapil Dev, chased 136 runs and won the match by five wickets. Kapil Dev was the Player of the Match. Talking about India's successful run chase in England, there have been only three occasions when the team has chased a successful run there. Apart from the victory at Lord's in 1986, India had successfully chased in the fourth innings at the Oval in 1971 and at Nottingham in 2007. In 1971, India chased 174 runs (losing six wickets) at the Oval, and in 2007, India chased 73 runs at Nottingham (Trent Bridge). England has defended a target of less than 200 in the fourth innings at Lord's twice. It did so against Ireland in 2019 and against South Africa in 1955.
