A massive fire broke out at a fuel storage depot in the Indonesian capital on Friday, killing at least 17 people. At the same time, dozens of people were injured in this incident. Thousands of nearby residents were forced to evacuate after the fire broke out. The officers provided this information.
Depot supplies 25 percent of fuel requirements
According to information, the fuel storage station, operated by the state-run oil and gas company Pertamina, is near a densely populated area in the Tanah Merah neighborhood in North Jakarta. It supplies 25 percent of Indonesia's fuel needs.
Hundreds of firefighters were present at the scene
Fire officials said at least 180 firefighters and 37 fire tenders were present at the spot to douse the blaze.
Videos of the incident shown on local TV channels showed hundreds of people running in panic. At the same time, thick clouds of black smoke and fire were seen in the entire sky. According to the information, the firemen brought the fire under control. Pertamina area manager Eko Kristiawan said a preliminary investigation showed a pipeline burst during heavy rains caused the fire.
Fuel supply will not be interrupted by fire
Officials said the fire would not disrupt the country's fuel supply. Satriyadi Gunwan, head of Jakarta's fire and rescue department, said people living in the residential area were still being evacuated and taken to a nearby village hall and a mosque.
17 people died in the incident
"The fire caused multiple explosions and quickly spread to residential houses," Gunawan said. Army chief General Dudung Abdurchaman, who visited the scene, said at least 17 people had been killed and 42 had been hospitalized, some with severe burns.
