If you use the Aadhaar app on your smartphone and haven't updated your 6-digit PIN in a long time, it's time to do so. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has urged users to change their Aadhaar app PIN regularly to strengthen the security of their Aadhaar-linked information and digital services.
According to UIDAI, regularly updating your PIN can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access, even if someone gains access to your unlocked smartphone.
Why Does UIDAI Recommend Changing Your Aadhaar App PIN?
UIDAI explained that the Aadhaar app PIN acts as an additional layer of protection for your personal information.
Even if your phone is unlocked or temporarily accessed by someone else, your Aadhaar details remain protected as long as they do not know your PIN.
The authority also pointed out that friends, family members or people nearby may accidentally notice your PIN while you are using the app. Changing it periodically helps reduce the chances of misuse.
Which Aadhaar Services Are Protected by the PIN?
The Aadhaar app PIN helps secure several important services, including:
Access to Aadhaar details
Biometric lock and unlock feature
e-KYC authentication
Aadhaar-linked digital services
Other security-sensitive functions within the Aadhaar app
A strong PIN helps prevent unauthorized access to these services and enhances the safety of your digital identity.
How to Change Your Aadhaar App PIN
If you haven't updated your Aadhaar app PIN recently, follow these simple steps:
Open the Aadhaar app on your smartphone.
Log in using your existing 6-digit PIN.
Tap on the Security section.
Select Change PIN.
Enter your current PIN.
Create a new 6-digit PIN.
Re-enter the new PIN to confirm the change.
Once completed, your Aadhaar app will be protected with the newly created PIN.
UIDAI's Tips for Creating a Strong PIN
UIDAI advises users to avoid easily predictable PIN combinations, such as:
Your date of birth
123456
111111
Repeated or sequential numbers
Any number that can be easily guessed by others
Instead, select a unique six-digit PIN that is difficult for others to predict while remaining easy for you to remember.
Why Regular PIN Updates Matter
With Aadhaar now linked to multiple government services, banking, identity verification and digital authentication, protecting your Aadhaar credentials has become more important than ever.
Changing your Aadhaar app PIN regularly adds an extra layer of security and helps safeguard your personal information against unauthorized access or misuse.
