Chennai Super Kings’ fortunes show no signs of turning around. Under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the ‘Yellow Brigade’ has suffered its seventh consecutive defeat. On Sunday, CSK was handed a 43-run defeat by Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has taken full responsibility for the loss. Speaking after the match, Gaikwad stated, “Had I contributed more, the outcome could have been different. The responsibility for this defeat lies with me.”
RCB’s Resounding Victory
It is worth noting that the Chennai Super Kings have yet to open their points tally in the current IPL season. CSK held a strong grip on Sunday’s match, but they conceded 97 runs in the final five overs, allowing RCB to post a formidable total of 250 runs.
Captain Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal, and ‘Player of the Match’ Tim David played pivotal roles in propelling RCB to this score. Subsequently, RCB’s bowlers delivered a commanding performance, bundling out CSK for 207 runs in 19.4 overs.
Gaikwad Joins an ‘Embarrassing Club’
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s name has now been added to an ‘embarrassing club’ that includes Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh. These three have become the only Indian captains in IPL history to suffer seven consecutive defeats. Kohli endured this ignominy as RCB captain in 2018 and 2019, while Yuvraj experienced a similar fate in 2013 as the captain of Pune Warriors India.
Regarding Gaikwad’s leadership record, CSK suffered four consecutive defeats under his captaincy during the 2025 IPL season. He was subsequently ruled out of the league due to injury. In the current season, Chennai has endured its third consecutive defeat.
What Gaikwad Said:
“Sarfaraz Khan, Craig Overton, Prashant Veer, and to some extent, Shivam Dube put up a good fight. Had I contributed a little myself, the outcome could have been different. I take responsibility for this defeat. We had almost secured Tim David’s wicket, but it turned out to be an illegal delivery. After that, he smashed shots to every corner of the ground. You have to give him credit. We should have taken early wickets during the Powerplay. If we had dismissed Kohli early on, we could have created an opportunity. The match was in our grasp until the 13th or 14th over, but after that, it slipped out of our hands.” — Ruturaj Gaikwad, Captain, Chennai Super Kings.
