Chennai, Jan 8 (IANS) The 18-year-old income tax (I-T) department proceedings against AIADMK general secretary and Tamil Nadu former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa and her close aide Sasikala were closed Thursday.

The withdrawal of cases came after the departmental proceedings against them were closed following the payment of compounding fees by the two.

A local court hearing the cases against Jayalalithaa and Sasikala was also informed about the I-T department's order.

The case pertains to the non-filing of I-T returns by the two for the assessment years 1991-92 and 1992-93.

The criminal proceedings against them were initiated in 1996.
