"It wasn't that I didn't have 5 crores, but..." — Rajpal Yadav candidly reveals the truth behind the cheque bounce case.

On February 5, 2026, renowned actor and comedian Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Delhi's Tihar Jail in connection with a ₹9 crore cheque bounce case. However, a few days later, the court granted him interim bail on the condition that he deposit a portion of the outstanding amount. Now, Rajpal Yadav has spoken candidly about this—the biggest controversy of his life.

He not only discussed the support he received from the industry and public opinion regarding the matter, but also revealed that his incarceration was not due to a lack of funds—specifically, the inability to pay ₹5 crore—but rather stemmed from an entirely different reason. Why, exactly, did Rajpal Yadav surrender? Let's explore the details below:

'The Matter Was Far Bigger Than Repaying ₹5 Crore'

Rajpal Yadav recently opened up about this past controversy during a candid conversation on Shubhankhar Mishra's podcast. When asked—given that he has acted in over 250 films—why people perceive that repaying ₹5 crore should not have been a difficult task for him, Rajpal Yadav offered an immediate response:

"That is precisely my question. The day people grasp this fact, they will understand my case as well. I did not go to jail because I lacked the funds. It was a matter involving issues and principles far greater than mere money.

This matter could have been resolved as early as 2012."

The actor further claimed that, as a result of this controversy, he suffered a massive financial loss ranging between ₹17 crore and ₹22 crore. He stated, "₹12 crore had already been invested in the project, and eventually, it evolved into a ₹22 crore venture. Even if your sworn enemy is involved in a project, it should still be allowed to see the light of day. You should let the audience be the ultimate judge. In this industry, 100 films are produced; of those, 80 fail, while only 20 succeed. This by no means implies that one has committed fraud against anyone."

Did the Industry Offer Support During These Difficult Times? When Rajpal Yadav was going through this difficult phase, did Bollywood stars stand by him? Responding to this question, the actor said, "Over the last 25 years—from my village all the way to Mumbai—there isn't a single person who hasn't stood by me. There isn't a single director or producer who hasn't called me back for work. If the industry hadn't been with me, how could I have done so many films?"

'I Have Complete Faith in the Justice System'

Concluding his remarks regarding his difficult phase, Rajpal Yadav stated, "I hold the Judiciary, the Legislature, and the Executive in the highest regard. I have complete faith in our justice system. I did not start this battle, but it will be brought to a conclusion because of me. There have been many misunderstandings; people ought to hear the full story."

It is worth noting that Rajpal Yadav currently appears in the recently released horror-comedy film 'Bhoot Bangla,' which features Akshay Kumar in the lead role. The movie is performing splendidly at the box office.
